Business Design Thinking ( BDT )

The Business Design Thinking ( BDT ) Programme @ SJI is based on the BDT model of the University of Toronto ’ s Rotman School of Management . This design thinking model envisions empathy through deep understanding to ideation and co-creation . This programme is about understanding the real needs of the users so as to come up with practical solutions to address their concerns . Through this programme , we hope to inculcate an innovative mindset in our students so that they may become men for others and come up with practical solutions to resolve real-life problems .

As part of the annual Artscience Prize in SJI , two teams of students had the opportunity to attend the ArtScience Innovation Workshop in Boston . The annual workshop sees teams of students from around the world come together for an intensive week of disruption and immersion in idea translation . We had the opportunity to interact with Professor David Edwards , international experts and other teams to gain invaluable knowledge and experience . There were guest speakers who shared with us the art and design development , business plan development , intellectual property , prototyping , presentation skills , and exhibition ; all of which allowed us to take our ideas further .

With these goals in mind , the students took on real issues in school from improving the recycling culture at SJI to making the school library more conducive . Some went further to collaborate with external agencies such like The Soup Spoon , Drips Café and The National Library Board ( NLB ), Junior Achievement ( JA ) and Barclay Banks to further hone their design thinking skills .
Our learning journey continues as we invited entrepreneurs such as alumnus Mr Benedict Leow ( Class of 1989 ), Executive Director of local food chain , The Soup Spoon , to share with teachers and students about innovation . Staff and students also made visits to ITE Central , School of Design and the NLB to learn about their journey of change . A group of students also took part in the SMU Youth Innovation Challenge 2015 where they learned about entrepreneurship and interacted with like-minded youths .
And when it finally came to presenting our ideas , we felt really proud to represent our country through our innovation , and especially being the youngest of the teams at the workshop .
We also visited many places of interests , learning more about the culture and heritage of Boston , and we strongly feel that this trip was the most meaningful and enriching experience of our lives .
