Members of SJIMB excited to clean houses for Project Scubillion
Outgoing Sec 4 Batch ’ 14 in celebration
Project Scubillion : Project Scubillion is an annual community service project that the band participates in . The aim of the whole project is to serve the last , the lost and the least in society , and we act on this by cleaning the houses of Singapore ’ s senior citizens . Aside from cleaning their houses , we also conversed with the elderly to get to know them better as many of them live alone . Project Scubillion requires the joint effort of both the SJI Military band as well as the metropolitan YMCA to complete our mission , which is known as the big sweep .

On the 26th of June , the band went to Pipit Road to clean some of the houses there . Though there were many houses that we cleaned , there was one that was the most salient . This was a decrepit house that was inhabited by an old man who seemed to be oblivious to its state . It took over 20 people to clean it , as there were expired food products and dirty plates everywhere . We cleaned for almost an hour and by the end , our efforts had made a great impact on the house . It had been cleaned to a state much more suitable for living , and the old man was extremely grateful for our help .
All in all , the whole project was truly an eye-opening experience for most of us . Most youths today do not have to deal with most of the cleaning and maintenance of the household these days . To go for this project and realizing the state of some houses really makes you appreciate what you have an at least gain some form of hands-on experience . There is a plethora of lessons that could be taken away from this ordeal , but personally , we feel that the most important one of all is that teamwork and cooperation really makes a great difference !
Band Music Exchange with Horwang School : On the 26th of July , the band was given an opportunity to learn from and share an experience with the Horwang School Band . They had come all the way from Thailand and , being an award-winning band , we were thrilled to have them playing alongside with us in our halls . We performed one of our pieces with them , and they played two of their pieces with us . Hearing them play was truly an enriching experience and we were determined to learn from them and improve our skills to reach their level . After the performance , we began the gift exchange to signify our respect and gratitude for each other . The Horwang School Band then proceeded to entertain us with a special performance dedicated to us . Their band was indeed great and we had motivated ourselves to be like them and to improve ourselves through sheer effort and dedication .
