It was a special year not just for the SJI Drama Club but for thespians around the world ! 2014 marks the 450th birth anniversary of the world ’ s greatest playwright , William Shakespeare . From Angola to the Andes and from Zimbabwe to Zurich actors , directors and theatre companies from across the world have been finding ways to celebrate Shakespeare ’ s gifts to the world .
Here at SJI , we decided to host and organize “ Short Shakes : The Shakespeare Short Play Festival .” Schools around Singapore were invited to put up a 10 minute performance based on any of Shakespeare ’ s writing and 17 schools around the nation answered the call !
The festival was a tremendous success with more than 1300 audience members in attendance . We were also strongly supported by The Singapore Repertory Theatre which selected 3 performances to perform on one night during “ Shakespeare in the Park .” Our thanks also to support from the English Language Institute of Singapore and the Singapore Drama Educators Association .
But most of all , we want to thank the SJI Community for supporting the Drama Club project . Next year , we ’ ll be putting on an adaptation of William Golding ’ s “ The Lord of the Flies ” and we look forward to seeing you there !
