PELANDOK SCOUTS

History of SJI Pelandok Scouts

SJI Pelandok Scouts is proud to be the oldest surviving Scout Unit in Singapore , and the 4th oldest Scout unit . It was started in 1911 when the first scoutmaster , Brother Gordian , applied for a warrant from the Scouts Association to start a troop in SJI with 25 scouts . The unit grew over the next 102 years . Eventually , another unit was created , the Hippo Scouts , to cater to growing demand , which moved to SJI International after it was established . SJI Scouts proudly celebrated their centenary in 2011 , and one of the activities we embarked on at the end of 2012 was Project Gordian , a volunteer trip to Cambodia . We hope that we can create more outstanding history for many more years to come .

In line with the mission of our school to empower our students to become men of integrity and men for others , the leaders of the Scout Group wanted our scouts to be exposed and be immersed with the life of the suffering and struggling poor in Siem Reap . It was also intended that our scouts would hone their leadership skills and to discover their gifts and talents through service . In addition this community service project would help our scouts to be a compassionate servant leader and discerning citizen of the world .

‘ Soup Rice ’ ( a nutritious meal of rice and vegetables ) which is a special treat the children look forward to and enjoy only once a week . After the meal , our scouts interacted with them and taught them simple English and Mathematics , played games and sang songs .
The group worked together and by association with a Jesuit Priest , Rev . Fr Stepanus and his team in reaching out to the poor children from the surrounding villages of Siem Reap . Our scouts were taught by the team to prepare , cook and serve

Tenderfoot Camp Tenderfoot Camp is a rite of passage for Secondary 1s who have just joined the Scouting fraternity . This year ’ s Tenderfoot Camp was held at Sarimbun Scout Camp . There , they learnt from their seniors scouting skills such as outdoor cooking , tent pitching and campfire cheers and songs . They put in their best and had fun , most importantly knowing that the skills they learnt during those two days will be needed throughout their scouting life .
