LEARNING JOURNEY

THE CAFFE PROGRAMME IN SJI SENIOR SCHOOL

“ The goodness of God has provided children with teachers who will instruct them in all spiritual truths .”
Meditations for the Time of Retreat 5 St . John Baptist De La Salle

The Character and Faith Formation Experience ( CAFFE ) programme is an integral part of the holistic education in SJI Senior School . Similar to the secondary school ’ s Religious , Moral and Social Education programme , CAFFE aims to enable youths in a Lasallian community to learn how to learn and learn how to live . Being modular in nature , the CAFFE programme affords our Senior School students with autonomy in their learning experience .

Motivated by St Anselm ’ s motto of “ faith seeking understanding ”, the CAFFE programme seeks to honour the richness of our Catholic tradition , “ guided by our Catholic philosophy which finds harmony , not contradiction , in spirit and matter , in faith and reason ” ( Mission of De La Salle Schools ). For our Catholic students , CAFFE seeks to cultivate an informed and active adult faith . The other students can expect to explore the rich religious , ethical , and philosophical patrimony of humanity .

With our pioneer cohort , the modules offered to them ranged from Catholic Formation modules such as Catholic Social Teaching and Salvation History to philosophical modules such as Theories of Human Nature and Bioethics .
Modules were presented by a range of speakers – both from within SJI as well as invited speakers who shared on their particular areas of expertise . For example , we had Dr . Benjamin Wong from the National Institute of Education speak about Chinese philosophical views of human nature , whilst Dr . Colin Ong from the National University Hospital spoke about beginning-of-life and end-of-life ethical issues . Domincan priest Fr . David Garcia spoke about both Catholic Social Teachings as well as Morality .
To mark the end of 2013 , students had a one-day retreat in November to take stock of their experiences for the year .
