AESTHETICS
SJI MILITARY BAND ( SJIMB )
The band wanted to put up an outstanding performance due to the fact that it was the Secondary 4 ’ s final performance with the band . Gavotte , the set piece , gave a light and airy feel , representing a cheerful spring morning . The choice piece , Celebrate , had both a fast movement , representing joy , and a slow movement , representing sorrow , similar to the ups and downs of life , as what the composer , Shimizu Daisuke , intended to convey through the piece . As an added bonus to the finale , the band played The Lion King , a medley of music from the famous movie , bringing back childhood memories for the audience . As the band played their last note , it was evident that the audience had enjoyed the performance as they cheered and gave a standing ovation .
After the show , the band ended off with their traditional band toast , exhausted , but proud of their performance .
Anniversary Parade 2013 The 161th Anniversary Parade , held on the 13th of July 2013 , saw contingents from various Uniformed Groups proudly donning their uniforms before jubilantly marching onto the field . After the prayer , a bright bugle fanfare resonated across the field and the band began marching to the centre of the field , triumphantly playing the Josephian ’ s March . Immediately following was a parade command given by the Parade Commander ; with the School Rally sounding off , the other contingents began to march to their designated locations . Every single cadet marched with discipline and energy , ultimately giving the contingents a neat look . After the Guestof-Honour Mr Christopher De Souza arrived , the SJIMB played the Road of Gokusen and the inspection began . After the

Guest of Honour ’ s inspection , Dr Koh began to address the parade and delivered an inspiring speech , followed by Mr De Souza ’ s address to the parade . Finally , it was the long awaited Awards Ceremony where the best cadets of each Uniform Group in their batches receive the honourable “ Outstanding Cadet Award ”. The boys smartly marched to the Guest of Honour where they gave a salute and received their award . When the Awards Ceremony was over , the long awaited March Pass began , where each contingent would march uniformly across the field and track to the band ’ s music while the emcees would announce each contingent ’ s achievements . The March Pass ended smoothly and it was time for the passing down of leadership from the Secondary 4 leaders to the Secondary 3s .
With that , the leaders of the other Uniform Groups stood at attention to the flags as the flag lowering ceremony started . With the slow

Imperial Sunset , the contingents stood firmly at attention . When the music ended , it was followed by a last bugle call . The moment the last note of the call faded away , the parade was dismissed .
After the official parade , the band had its own Change Of Command , with the help of the 1st Drum Major of the SJIMB , Mr Andrian Villanueva . The mace and the drum major sash were handed from Ong Han Yang to Joel Kwok . Following that , the SJIMB of 2014 , under Drum Major Joel Kwok , marched proudly , with the Secondary 4 bandsmen standing at a corner and saluting .

It was definitely an emotional moment as the band said their goodbyes to the Secondary 4 bandsmen . But as they say ‘ once a bandsmen , always a bandsmen ’, despite them having been ‘ passed out ’, the Secondary 4 bandsmen are always ready to be of service to the band .
