The Chess Club holds weekly training lessons under the expert guidance of our coach Mr . Rico Lim .

Competitions The activities for the year opened with the 64th National Schools Individual Chess Championships .
We are proud that Jung Younghoon ( 304 ) managed 4th placing overall in the Open category . Another Josephian , Mitchell Han Tong Joon ( 203 ) also came in 4th place in the Under -14 category . John Alec Branzuela ( 206 ) won 8th place in the same category . The contestants put in their best effort in this tournament and had a chance to show off their skills in their respective categories .
In April , our members also took part in the
Serangoon Garden Country Club ( SGCC ) Allegro Chess . Younghoon did best , coming in with 3rd placing overall .
In the National Team Tournament held in September , SJI sent two teams to compete in the Open Section . It was a learning
experience where we had to compete with players from various Junior Colleges and top Secondary Schools . After six gruelling rounds , we emerged as 3rd Runner-Up in the Open Section and 2nd Runner-Up in the South Zone Category .
The SJI Open tournament is an annual intraschool competition which aims to foster greater teamwork among club members while fighting for the SJI Chess Champion title . Younghoon emerged as the champion of the tournament for the second successive year , while Mitchell came in 2nd and Samuel Yip ( 203 ) 3rd .
Community Involvement Programme During the March holidays , we gave our time at the SGCC Chess Club . We helped in the administrative and logistical preparation of their annual Chess Tournament . We understood how difficult and stressful it was to carry out a big scale tournament like this . We had a memorable time and gained precious experience from this community involvement programme .
2012 has been a fruitful year for the Chess Club . We thank God for His blessings and hope that we will be able to continue to do well next year , under the guidance of Mr Rico .
