National Cadet Corps NCC ( Land )

The SJI NCC ( Land ) unit is actually one of SJIʼs first CCAs , having been established in 1906 . It is one of the pioneer NCC units in the country , alongside with Raffles Institution . Despite practically fading away due to the decrease in interest levels and enthusiasm during World War I , the Cadet Corps was eventually revived by the colonial government in 1917 , with SJI being one of the schools to form a Cadet unit . The cadets in these units had the opportunity to train under various British military regiments and even wardens from prison . The cadetsʼ syllabus included signaling , learning parts of a rifle and much more . Their skills proved useful during the outbreak of World War II , when a large number of Josephian cadets joined the Singapore Volunteer Corps and fought against the Japanese troops when defending Singapore .

“ The impossible we do straightaway , miracles take a little longer .” This is what every NCC ( Land ) cadet in SJI strives to

achieve . Conceived in 1906 , the unit is an elite group of disciplined cadets , with a rich heritage of committed , successful leaders . We instill character and passion in every cadet , creating a platform for them to excel in future .
In 2012 , SJI NCC ( Land ) had a fruitful year , attaining her 16th consecutive Best Unit Gold Award . Furthermore , we became the Overall Champion for the Shooting Competition held in 2011 , defeating long defending champions , Fuhua Secondary School . Also , we have witnessed the passing over of leadership from our Secondary Four seniors to the incoming Secondary Three Specialists .
160th Anniversary Parade Like every year , SJI had its annual parade on 10 July 2012 , in which all the UG ’ s took part and celebrated the passing of the year . The anniversary parade also serves as the passing on of leadership from the Secondary Four seniors to the incoming Secondary
Three cadets . Moreover , this year was especially important as SJI celebrated its 160th anniversary on campus . It was a grand event with all the different UGs in their pristine uniforms , and an eye-catching performance by our very own SJI NCC ( Land ) Precision Drill Squad . The guest of honour was Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean , an old boy who attained the Best Recruit Award in 1967 during his first year as a NCC ( Land ) cadet .
Dragon Boat Training NCC is not all about drills and regimental , physical training . It is also about forging a common identity and a stronger sense of pride and belonging within the unit . The unit had organized a dragon boat training held at the Singapore Dragon Boat Association on 24 August 2012 .
