Learning Journey
The Science Mentorship Programme
Science Innovation Programme This year , SJI sent 5 groups of 3 students to make our mark at the Science Innovation Programme ( IvP ) which was organised by the Gifted Education Branch , Ministry of Education . The IvP aims to provide a unique opportunity for pupils to develop their problem-solving and inventive skills under the guidance of expert-mentors from tertiary institutions and other organisations .
Despite the many challenges , we eventually managed to be among the top schools in Singapore to be selected to showcase two projects at the IvP Fair .
The key idea of IvP is to empower the future generation of inventors , thinkers of Singapore , providing them with an
opportunity to begin trying . The designs generated in IvP may seem small to some , but these small inventions are the beginnings of big dreams , dreams of helping those who need comfort . Thus , IvP is a stepping stone for us future dreamers .
Little Green Dot Student Research Grant 2012 . 11 teams from various secondary schools and junior colleges , including 3 teams from SJI were given the opportunity to learn under the guidance of local practicing environmentalists to carry out research projects as part of the Little Green Dot Student Research Grant 2012 . This Research Grant aims to promote learning of Singapore ’ s natural environment through discovery and biodiversity studies . Each
team received S $ 3,000 in funding to conduct research on the theme of ‘ Marine and Freshwater Conservation ’.
At the end of their research , the students did a sharing of their findings at a symposium held on 19 April through presentations and exhibitions .
Personnel from the National Environment Agency and Public Utilities Board and members of the public were present to evaluate the potential of their research findings .
The symposium , held for the first time , was jointly organized by IKEA Singapore , the World Wide Fund for Nature ( Singapore ) and the Nature Society ( Singapore ).
