Rugby

SJI first played rugby formally in 1948 , a teacher from UK ; Mr Reed formed a team that played in the local age group tournaments , as the schools tournaments had not been established then . However the team disbanded when Mr Reed left SJI .

In 1954 , Mr Yap Boon Chuan , a teacher in SJI also tried to form a team to play a friendly match against Raffles Institution . It was certain the game was played but there are differing accounts of the scores . The winner of the game is dependent on whether the account comes from an SJI or RI boy .
An incredibly talented Bro Sylvester held the reins of a very successful SJI Rugby team in the late ʻ60s . He brought a group of boys who never played rugby before to become the first school team in Singapore to lift the National Schools U16 Police Cup . Rugby in SJI came to a standstill again in 1978 when there were no teachers available to take charge of the sport .
In 1989 SJI Rugby was re-established and has been active for 24 years now .
Season November 2011 – September 2012
The 4th Scrum of the Earth Malaysian Tour ( 5 – 9 December 2011 ) It was a fairly successful tour this time round as we won all six matches in the U14 an U16 categories . During the tour both teams observed a minute ’ s silence before each game as a sign of respect for the late Ms Priscilla Krempl ( former Principal of St . Andrew ’ s Secondary and champion for school rugby in Singapore ) and the late “ Uncle Hung ” who coached St John ’ s Institution ( a Lasalle school in KL ) for more than 30 years .
The Seven 7 ’ s Game SJI Rugby had very few successes at Sevens Rugby over the years ; however the ‘ C ’ Division team bowled everyone over when they emerged champions of the Grant Thornton Saint ’ s 7 ’ s 2011 . En route to claiming the crown , we drew against the American School , scored wins against Bukit Batok , Greenridge St Andrew ’ s and the Australian School .
