Canoeing

The SJI Canoeing Team started to take part in the National Inter-School Canoeing Championships in 1989 and since then , the ʻCʼ Division has been the national champion for 16 years and the ʻBʼ Division , 6 times .

National Inter-School Canoeing Championships The SJI Canoeing Team has been training arduously over the past year to compete in the championships held at Macritchie reservoir . Despite very tough competition , the SJI boys still put up a valiant fight against other strong teams such as ACS ( I ) and HCI . In particular , Chua Teck Yan ( 302 ) performed commendably ; achieving 4th and 5th in his 1000m and 500m K1 races , despite having to race against competitors older than him .
The team consisting of Thaddeus Lim ( 432 ), Reuven Cheng ( 434 ), Nicholas Ho ( 436 ) and Ignatius Koh ( 431 ) blazed the way with a Gold medal in the K4 1000m event . Edgar Wang ( 421 ) grabbed the double Silver in the C1-1000m and 500m events while the C2 pairs of Brandon Krygsman ( 431 ) and Lan Yixiang ( 301 ), Xu Yitong ( 425 ) and Cheong Kai Lun ( 301 ), and Jonah Tan ( 303 ) and Samuel Choy ( 301 ) also did the school proud by all making it into the finals . However ,

2 better results awaited us . In the K2-500m event , Captain Reuven Cheng and Benjamin Lee ( 421 ) pulled off a stunning victory against favorites ACS ( I ), with Nicholas Ho ( 436 ) and Thaddeus Lim ( 432 ) grabbing the bronze , denying yet another ACS ( I ) boat a medal . However , it was not to be our day . Despite trailing more than 20 points to ACS ( I ), the boys were still determined to do their best in the final event . Joel Chua ( 421 ), Jerryl Goh ( 302 ), Benjamin Lee and Ignatius Koh fended off strong competition to grab a final Silver medal in the K4-500m event . The combined efforts of the team helped SJI clinch a commendable runner-up placing in the SJI ‘ B ’ Division category .
In the ‘ C ’ Division , the boys carried on the tradition of SJI ’ s dominance in the category with medals in all events . The pair of Brandon Lim ( 202 ) and Ian Chan ( 210 ) became the first pair in SJI ’ s history of canoeing to attain a double Gold in the K2 events . The other team members also performed outstandingly . Eventually the points racked up resulting in SJI retaining the ‘ C ’ Division title .
