Health Screenings
In addition, CT State Law mandates screenings to be done during the school year by the nurses. Scoliosis screenings are required for all grade 7 girls. All students will be screened by the school nurses in Physical Education classes( students not in PE will be screened in the nurses’ office). Letters will be mailed home if the nurse finds the need for a doctor’ s examination. Students with known scoliosis will be mailed referrals for updating.
Student Injuries
For safety reasons, students with medical assistance devices and adaptive equipment such as( but not limited to) casts, braces, splints, slings, boots, stitches, and / or stapes, crutches, canes, walkers, or wheelchairs / scooters may not be permitted to partake in Physical Education activities. It is the responsibility of the parent / guardian to supply the documentation at the initial time of injury and with any updates / changes. Students may be excluded until such appliance or sutures / staples have been removed and written clearance is provided by a healthcare provider. Students using crutches, canes, walkers, or wheelchairs / scooters must be self-sufficient and have documentation form a healthcare provider outlining parameters for use.
If a student does need to leave class early due to an injury, please adhere to the following process:
• Doctor’ s note to the Nurses’ Office
• Nurse will provide an early release pass and email all necessary staff members
• If the student needs to use the elevator, they can get the elevator key pass in the House Office.
• Students can only have one buddy to escort them( if deemed necessary).
Mental Health Resources
During the challenging times of middle school, student’ s mental health could be a concern for a family. We encourage you to reach out to our school counseling department with specific concerns. At JFK, we have an outside agency Community Health Center( CHC) that offers therapeutic services during the school day.
