We were totally blitzed at this point and we pulled up to the Border Patrol guard and he asked if either of us had ever been arrested and I blurted out, sure. He made us get out of the car and he searched it and then let us go. Dick still never forgave me for providing this answer to the guard!
Unfortunately, our funds were depleted so we went to the Canadian Government and told them that we had no money. To our surprise they gave us meal vouchers for three meals a day and accommodation at youth hostels. We kept moving North and we needed to take a ferry

Dick commented that it sure would be great if we had something to smoke and literally just at that moment, a telescoping roach clip with a joint came out of a parked car and people in the car asked if we wanted a hit! Marine Highway. Since we were still in Canada, they gave us meals and very nice accommodation. We drove the car onto the ferry called Taku and walked around this vessel that would we would ride for three nights as it traveled through the beautiful inside passage towards Haines Alaska on the Alaskan Marine Highway. The boat ride was fantastic and we got to stop at some of the port towns such as Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau along the way as we routinely saw pods of killer whales and other wildlife. At night, we would roll out our sleeping bags on the deck and sleep under the stars. Truly and incredible
