Angie and Keith Westerhout we struggled with our lessons. We hooked up with some friends- Angie and Keith Westerhout- who were dance instructors and were very organized with their dancing and we tagged along for years as we loved this new dance genre. We had our preferred live bands and venues and looked forward to each night of dancing and socializing with a new group of friends.
Life was quite active in Perth over the years as Mimi and I would go dancing, traveling, dining out frequently, spending time with our Perth family, friends and our two boys. Luke had moved out of the house and was living nearby in a nice townhouse and he is enjoying his engineering work that is a bit intense sometimes. Ryan lives with us and he commutes to his Perth office by bus daily and he has a very active life with his commitment to playing competition tennis at my club, golf with his buddies, after hours work functions and his photography.
I originally taught Ryan how to play golf when he was young and I bought him some juniors clubs. He was fortunate to learn how to play at a very nice country club called the Vines. This course had 36 holes and it is fairly difficult but Ryan loved to drive the golf buggy and be out on this course together with me. I was able to play at this course because of my friend Peter Martini but for other elite golf courses I offered a marketing contra deal where I would boost their business and in return they would supply a golf cart and let me bring as many people as I wanted to play at their very nice courses. This worked out quite well and usually each club let me play for about a year. I continuously invited many friends to play with me and got to learn golf this way by playing on some very tough and beautiful courses. At one location, Araluen, we had to run up to the greens before we chipped on to chase away the many kangaroos that were sitting on the green! Ryan and I would play often at these very nice golf clubs and he was into it but he really needed to learn properly and play with people his own age. I was also able to get Ryan into a very nice private golf club where they really focused on training him and let him play in several junior competitions. Typically after the match, he then had to dress up in a jacket and tie for a formal dinner presentation where they publicly acknowledged his achievements during the competition even if he lost the match.
Sue & Steve O’ Keefe
My friend Steve O’ Keefe was instrumental in getting Ryan into a very nice private golf club. Steve and his wife Sue have been our friends for more than 24 years and one of their son’ s, Justin, went to school with my son Luke and they are still very good friends, although Justin now lives in London. Sue plays high level competition tennis at a nearby tennis club and Steve plays competitive water polo and travels worldwide for events.
Lina and Shaun Ridley have been our friends for 24 years as well and they have always
Lina & Shaun Ridley helped us out with birthday parties and other functions and an Italian dinner at their place is always a treat. I had Shaun at my tennis club as a member for a year or two and he is a great player. We would meet early before the social games and have some real men’ s singles and each point was a matter of life and death! But it was all fun. When he stopped playing because of some health reasons everyone from the club kept asking for him. Lina and Shaun have two lovely daughters and their oldest, Michelle, went to school with Luke since grade school.
The friends that we have known longer than
Elizabeth and Peter Martini any are Elizabeth and Peter Martini who are always making us our favorite meal of fettuccine vongole( clam sauce). Peter was responsible for getting me hooked on golf as he would give me unlimited free play at a country club golf course, when he was the general manager of an exclusive golf and country club and allowed me to bring as many people as I wanted for a year. We have
