I was fortunate enough to be able to help my niece Nicole in selecting her university studies many years ago. She wanted to go to university but couldn’ t see any particular course of study. When we broke it down the choice was clear for her to become a speech pathologist that would require a masters degree. This was perfect for her and off she went to the University of Maryland and received her Bachelors Degree and then to Montclair College to get her Masters degree and she loved the entire journey. I was so happy to get progress reports during her program and learn of her good grades and amazing enthusiasm. It was a perfect career choice. She now has two lovely children and has the opportunity to go back to work soon and then possibly set up her own practice.
Dear Uncle Barry,
Brad and I were sitting on the lanai last night and discussing about special times we’ ve shared with you and we thought you might like to hear what we were thinking about. You know you are my favorite Uncle and despite the distance, you have remained an important part of my life! One of the earlier memories that came to mind was having a horseback riding lesson. That was such a treat for me, even now horses are incorporated into our special times, and that started with you. Brooke and I are going on a trail ride this weekend at a nearby farm and then we have a vacation planned at a Dude Ranch in June that we are so excited about. I remember when you and Aunt Mimi lived in NY and you encouraged me to write stories and I got to type on your IBM computer. Just recently found one of the stories I wrote as we were unpacking!
Visiting Australia when I was 12 years old is a vacation I will never forget! Making the commercial for cotton balls, feeding kangaroos, the road trip to Albany, and Meghann affectionately nicknamed‘ chook face’ are memories that make me smile 25 years later. Our trip to Seattle, and hike up Mt. Rainier are experiences unlike anything I’ ve ever done and I am so glad I was able to share them with you, Aunt Mimi, Luke and Ryan.
We were also thinking about our wedding – it meant so much for you, Aunt Mimi, Luke and Ryan to come across the earth to share that day with me and Brad! Just went through pictures from that day and watching you and Aunt Mimi dancing brought a smile to my face! And most recently – your visit to Virginia – we had a super time with you at the DC Zoo, apple picking, & hanging out on the deck for‘ Porch time!’ The commercial you created for‘ Turtle Man’ still cracks us up! In such a short visit – you really bonded with the kids and helped them both to explore and learn more about science( atoms, mass, elements) and animals. This has heightened their interests in areas that they have developed a passion for!
You have shaped my life most of all by suggesting Speech Pathology as a career! I have really enjoyed this career before the kids were born and am excited to start working part time in the Fall. I have been working on my continuing education classes and it has been fun for me to learn more about my field. I appreciate your support when we were going through difficult times with the kids and hope you know how special you are to our family! I hope these memories bring smiles to you as they did to Me and Brad as were talking about it.
Love,
Nicole

I am not sure that I was as helpful with her sister, Meghann as she was a bit more difficult to figure out. She was strong in math, physics and chemistry so I suggested engineering and she went for it and received a Bachelors Degree in Environmental Engineering. This career path did not really fit her personality so she looked for more and found it with her MBA from UCLA and subsequent great employment that she loves.
