The next delegate to be interviews was Mr. Adrian Chiu of Kelly Yang Project, representing Portugal. He explained how his country has been successful in reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
“55% of the total energy produced in our country is renewable and we recorded one of the lowest fossil fuel consumption amounts in Europe. Portugal is a leading nation in agriculture and we have the highest export amount of tomatoes in the world”.
The delegate emphasized the two strengths of his country in the fields of energy and agriculture, and suggested that the country has the capacity to support other nations by exporting technologies and knowledge in the fields or directly working with citizens for agriculture. However, Portugal also has water management issues, thus requires support from the international community.
At last, the delegate of Lebanon, Mr. Haru Morita of Kindai University High School, answered an interview request and he explained his country’s position on climate change and his committee topic of transport.
He said Lebanon is deeply concerned about climate change, particularly the sea level rise. However, he explained that Lebanon has serious financial issues, and the first step that they have to take to tackle climate change is getting funds from developed countries through negotiations.
The delegate also explained that the awareness of climate change is insufficient among Lebanese citizens, thus many unknowingly emit CO2, mostly due to using cars. Therefore he pointed out the necessity of appropriate education in order to make the civil society involved in tackling climate change.
