Dr. Mizan Highlight:

The Importance of Disaster Risk Management in The Pacific Region

Dr. Mizan is a JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Researcher at the United Nations University-Institution for the Advanced Study of Sustainability. His research is mainly in the field of disaster risk reduction and climate change with projects and mission experiences in Indonesia, Philippines, and a range of other countries.

Dr Mizan believes the youth need to find a link between their activities at conferences and simulations real life climate change action. “I think JEMUN [and other MUN's] are very positive and should be encouraged; climate change is an area that needs to be explored,” Dr, Mizan said.

In the case of climate change, he believes climate change is something that is happening now, not just in the future.

He is adamant the youth will adapt to climate change and create a new culture to ensure that the reduction of greenhouse gases will occur.

Dr Mizan shared his professional experience with disaster risk management with the UNDP committee room. He suggested that to reduce the risk of disasters at present time, it is imperative to examine previous data.

Dr Mizan expressed how important it is for the youth to take leadership and be involved in formal policy proceedings in climate change from a national and international level.

“I think it’s important that countries with traditional norms need to encourage the youth and to equip them with essential knowledge such as access to high school and university education,” Dr Mizan said.

This year’s JEMUN conference is allowing youth to take action for sustainable development and helping those who are passionate about climate change to gain experience, and transferable skills for the future.

This morning, the UNDP committee room was visited by guest speaker Dr. Mizan Bustanul Fuady Bisri, who talked about his research, and professional experience with ASEAN on disaster risk management in the Pacific Region.
