SNIPPETS Mumbai | 18th August, 2012 - 7th November, 2012 | Vol.2 www.jbcnschool.edu.in Pages 4 | Free Bake Sale During the first and second quarters Financial Literacy was a part of the curriculum for the learners of grades 5, 6 and 7. During these classes learners were taught the basic terms of Business Studies and Economics. They learnt concepts of exchange, value for money, budgets etc. As a culminating activity for this subject, the learners organized a “Bake Sale” for the whole school. The learners were asked to plan and budget for a food item that they could prepare themselves and which could be prepared at a low budget. Learners were asked to make budgets for the same and decide the cost for the food item. The teacher had instructed that the food had to be made by them and also the cost per plate could not exceed Rs. 10/- . After preparations for two weeks, the day finally dawned on the 27th of September. On that day, learners got a variety of food items, which included mini pizzas, juices, biscuits with toppings, mini idlis and many such mouth watering items. All the learners from grades 1 to 7 participated in the event and made it a huge success. The grade that managed to make the most profit was grade VI. Overall it was a very 'fulfilling' activity in which the learners learnt a lot and also enjoyed themselves. Home Truths On the 21st of October 2012 we met a lady whose name was Dhun Panthaki and she talked to us about personal hygiene and a couple of other topics that cleared quite a few of our doubts and queries. She opened to us a new world of our body inside and made us aware of realities that our parents would never dream of, leave alone talk about as frankly as she did. We all listened with rapt attention as she kept us engaged and engrossed in the discussions. We had quite a few laughs as the boys were not too serious about the implications of her talk. But Ms Panthaki and a few serious audience members did drive home the importance of the session. Before we met her and heard her thoughts, our minds were blackboards waiting to be written on and after the writing was inscribed we all felt good to know a little more about our body.
