Expanded facility has grand opening
We are up and running ! The official grand opening of Courts 3 and 4 , housing the joint venture of a shared facility including tennis and pickleball for the Charbonneau community , is now underway ! Current members came to inspire and encourage their neighbors as they tried out their skills at the free clinic given by our pro , Donna Roisom . Some had played before in other locations , but many were giving it a shot for the first time . The pickleball courts were filled , and smiles were worn by all . During the Grand Opening Ceremony , Charbonneau Country Club President Anne Shevlin shared the history on how the concept in Charbonneau got started and Jim Meierotto , the country club general manager , recognized the staff and volunteers that helped make it possible . Roisom , who is also the Sports Center manager , extended her gratitude to all the volunteers that helped on and off the court . Donna and the council would like to extend a special thank you to these individuals for playing an important part in getting this project started . They are : Steve Hall , Kathi Gray , John McLain , Gary Newbore and Rick Schram .
Following the clinics and ceremony , participants had the opportunity to demo paddles and racquets . There were court shoes available to try on other equipment for purchase . A big thank you to Brian from Player ’ s Racquet Shop for bringing the goods and helping the players make educated decisions on their equipment .
The new courts are now available for play .

Is your woodworking a victim of downsizing ?
By R . A . BROWN Charbonneau resident
Working with wood is a hobby for tens of thousands of people around the country , from woodturners to fine furniture builders , toy makers and home repair artists . The WoodWorkers Guild of America alone has nearly 500,000 followers online . How many of us woodworkers live in Charbonneau ?
Woodworking , however , nearly always takes space and many of us have given up space while downsizing to grow older responsibly . How many have curtailed our woodworking hobby in the downsizing process ? How many have wanted to take up woodworking but have never had the space ?
My wife and I began a serious look at downsizing over a year ago . We were living on 10 acres in Columbia County with a large home and all the equipment to maintain acres of pasture , a small vineyard , raised gardens and lots of yard . But we decided to make our own choices for our future rather than leave it to the children . We decided to downsize while we could still have one more life “ do-over .”
So how does this relate to woodworking ? We have downsized right out of woodworking . From three separate woodworking areas of
nearly 500 square feet , I now have a small 4-foot workbench and a full storage unit with a table saw , sanders , planers , grinders , dust collectors and even a small CNC setup .
The question I have decided to ask is the same as the astronomers of the SETI Project – “ Am I alone ?”
Before I liquidate a shop full of equipment , I decided to ask — Are there others with an interest in woodworking and are there enough of us to be worth the effort to figure out a place and way to do it ? If there are five of us we may not have enough to tackle the effort , however , if there are 50 – maybe it will be a different story ?
The retirement center in Canby has a community shop and it is a common feature in a number of retirement communities in California . Others have figured out how to have shared space and shared tools , so , if you are interested , join us for a discussion and we can see how many show up and explore what the range of interest actually is .
If you ’ ve wanted to continue a woodworking hobby or just always wanted to take up the hobby , come join us . Please contact me and , if there is enough interest , I will plan on setting up a meeting at the Activity Center sometime in January . Questions and suggestions contact : Roger Brown , 503 970 8959
