Sonya ( Berger ) Johnson February 24 , 1950 – July 24 , 2024
Sonya ( Berger ) Johnson , 74 , peacefully passedawayWednesday , July 24 , 2024 at her home in Molalla , OR . Born February 24 , 1950 in East Stroudsburg , PA ., she was a daughter of Ellsworth Asher Berger and Arlene Gladys ( nee Kent ) Berger Zeman . Sonya grew up in Mt . Bethel , PA , and graduated from Bangor High School in 1968 .
After high school she operated Fernwood Riding Stable in Bushkill , PA then moved to Oregon where , being proficient in equine Western and English style riding , she raised and broke Arabian , Standardbred and Quarter horses . Sonya loved cats and was a catmom to many throughout her life . After moving to Oregon in the late 70 ’ s , Sonya met and married Allen Johnson , an electrician , and together they operated a cattle ranch , had horses , and had a large garden and a small orchard .
Sonya was an excellent baker and cook , and froze and canned produce from their property . She worked for ECD in Canby , Oregon for over 25 years and , being into fitness , she bicycled 10 miles each way to and from her job . Sonya worked extremely hard and was very generous .
She is survived by husband , Allen Johnson of Molalla , OR ; two sisters , Lillian Kay Leach of Lebanon , PA . and Alice Ann Berger of Mt . Bethel , PA ; a stepdaughter : Julie Johnson of Welston , OK ; an uncle : Donald Kent of Williamsburg , VA ; a nephew : Russell Read of Lebanon , PA ; nieces : Robin Freeman of Jonestown , PA , Jocelyn Strunk of Macungie , PA and Joleen Strunk of Kalama , WA ; many great nieces , great nephews and cousins .
A special thanks to Joleen Strunk for helping Sonya before her passing . An interment of the ashes will be done at Willamette National Cemetary in Happy Valley , OR . A Celebration of Life ceremony will be announced at a later date . Donations in Sonya ’ s name can be made to Hazelshousepdx . com or Kittydreams . org .
William “ Gary ” Trout , 88 , a resident of the Roy Community passed away on July 25 , 2024 at the Kaiser Westside Medical Center in Hillsboro .
Gary was born on April 21 , 1936 in Wellington , Texas . He was the only child born to EdgarandEdna ( Hardman ) Trout . At the age of five after his mother had passed away , Gary moved with his dad to North Plains to live with his Grandma and Grandpa . His dad opened a blacksmith shop and the family moved to Banks after the World War II . Here he attended Banks Public Schools , Graduating from Banks High School with the Class of 1955 . He excelled at athletics and was proud to say he lettered as a freshman and played football , basketball and ran track . Following high school Gary attended Oregon Tech and studied diesel mechanics .
He was drafted into the US Army in 1957 and worked in dispatch in the Army ’ s motor pool in Baton Rouge , Louisiana . He was honorably discharged in 1959 as a Specialist .
Gary had gone to high school with the brothers of his future wife , Maryann Peters , but didn ’ t date until they were set up through mutual friends . They soon began dating and married on December 28 , 1963 at St Francis Catholic Church in Roy , OR . He was proud that he had gotten “ the best-looking girl in town ”. They made their home in Reedville ( Aloha ) until 1993 when they moved back to her family farm in Roy . They had three children together , Bob , Debbie and Doug . Maryann passed away in 2007 .
Gary worked in canneries during the summer when in high school , and later worked in the logging industry in the Banks area . After his discharge from the Army , he worked for over 33 years was as a truck driver for Consolidated Freightways . He took an early retirement at the age of 55 and pursued other interestsincluding owning a tree farm and rental properties and raising beef cattle with his son , Bob , and brother-in-law . He also worked with his sons and built the Banks Business Center where his son , Doug , has his auto body business . Early retirement also gave him time to pursue his favorite activity for over 30 years which was helping his sons in the pit crew with racing cars . They raced at the local track in Banks and traveled on the circuit in the Northwest starting with stock cars but later moved to dirt late model race cars .
During his retirement and up to the days before his passing , Gary enjoyed helping Doug at his Auto Body shop ( Sweere ’ s Auto Body ). He still drove his pickup and

Levi J Smith October 13 , 1938 – May 6 , 2024
Levi J Smith , 85 , of Wilsonville , Oregon , passed away peacefully in his home on May 6 , 2024 .
Levi was born in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania on October 13 , 1938 . He was raised by his mother , Marie Fisher , and father , Levi J Smith , Sr . His family moved to Eugene , Oregon where Levi graduated from Eugene High School in 1955 and met the love of his life , Dianne Bennett . Levi attended Notre Dame for two years and then transferred to Oregon State , earning a BS in Chemical EngineeringandBusinessAdministrationin1960 . After serving in Korea as an Army 1st Lt ., he returned home in 1962 and enrolled in law school . He graduated from the UC Berkeley School of Law in 1967 and practicedlawforoverthirtyyears in Arizona and Oregon .
Levi was a passionateriverrafterandworldtrav- eler . He enjoyed taking his family on rafting trips down the Rogue , Bio Bio , and Grand Canyon as well as multiple wildlife safaris in Africa . However nothing made him happier than seeing the sites of Paris with his four granddaughters .
After Dianne passed away in 2002 , Levi continued his passions in retirement including singing , bridge , piano , serving the Charbonneau community , and working out at the local YMCA . He later remarried a close friend , Gail Griggs .
On July 31 , 2024 , Levi joined Dianne at Willamette National Cemetery , where he received military honors . He is survived by his son , Greg Smith ( Lisa Orup-Smith ); and their two daughters , Kira and Karina ; and his daughter Resa Smith ; and her two daughters , Lucie and Clementine Parodi .
was a regular figureat the shop and around town , helping with the bookkeeping , answering phones , getting the mail at the post office box , making deposits at the bank , and visiting his friends Steve and Stephy at Champion Sign . At home he became a prolific reader and especially enjoyed books about the military and World War 2 . His kids were always trying to find new titles for him that he hadn ’ t read yet . He also took on the responsibility of keeping the large amount of grass mowed at the family farm , with the help of Bob and a very nice riding lawn mower .
After a serious heart attack in 2021 , Gary was put on hospice as the outlook was grim . However , after a short time it became clear he was going to recover and was not done yet . He was very proud that he “ flunked out ” of hospice and this experience gave him a renewed appreciation of life . Although he mostly followed his doctors dietary advice , he still occasionally enjoyed gravy , chicken-fried steak , KFC , pie and a chocolate shake , because as he declared when the salt shaker he tried to sneak was pried from his hand , “ what ’ s the point of living !”. And “ I ’ m like a hummingbird , I need sugar !” His family all rallied around him to give him the support he needed and Gary was happy and surrounded by his loving family up to the end .
He is preceded in death by his loving wife , Maryann , a daughter-in-law , Teresa Trout , a half-sister , Barbara Carson and his parents . He is survived by three children and their spouses , Robert “ Bob ” ” Guppy ” Trout of Roy , Debra “ Debbie ” and Gary Gougér of Ridgefield , Washington , Douglas “ Doug ” and Dana Trout of Aloha , a half-brother , Ted Trout of Aloha and four grandchildren , Jordan , Emily , Julia and Cassidy .
