Mission Statement :
The mission of the Nonviolence Institute is to teach , by word and example , the principles and practices of nonviolence , and to foster a community that addresses potentially violent situations with nonviolent solutions .
Background : In the summer of 2000 , fifteen-year-old Jennifer Rivera was gunned down in front of her house . She was the state ’ s key witness in a murder trial and was to testify the next day . Jennifer ’ s murder was the catalyst for the creation of the Nonviolence Institute . Tired of burying their neighborhood children , the ministry team at St . Michael ’ s church on the Southside of Providence took action , founding the Institute in its church rectory .
What We Do : To reduce community violence in Rhode Island , the Institute offers intervention services ( street outreach , victim services ) and prevention programs ( nonviolence training , employment readiness , and re-entry ). We work every day to build a Beloved Healthy Community reflective of the actions and teachings of Dr . Martin Luther King , Jr .
