HOW TO GET THERE : Access the trail at a small parking lot located between 20 and 24 Connors Farm Road .
Ballard Park , Newport
WHY GO ? It ’ s essentially a quarry with trails surrounding it . Check out the overlooks , which include a thirty-foot cliff over an open meadow . Trails are short . This is a very kidfriendly hike .
HOW TO GET THERE : Ballard Park is located at the intersection of Hazard and Wickham roads in Newport .
Westconnaug Meadows , Scituate
WHY GO ? Ironically enough , there are no meadows there . If you ’ re into trees , they ’ re all labeled with short descriptions . ( You ’ ll find red oaks , white pines and sassafras .) This trail is another fun one for kids .
HOW TO GET THERE : The trailhead is by the parking area for a ballfield on George Washington Parkway in Scituate .
Steere Hill Farm / Heritage Park , Glocester
WHY GO ? There are more than five miles of trails and a beautiful hill on the top of the main trail , with a bench underneath it . It opens up to a large field , which offers a wonderful view .
HOW TO GET THERE : It ’ s off Putnam Pike in Glocester .

WHY GO ? Catch a glimpse of wildlife at one of the Audubon Society of Rhode Island ’ s wildlife refuges . Ample scenery of roughly 1,013 acres of fields , diverse forest habitats including a pond , streams , a waterfall and even a historic cemetery , put this refuge on the list of places where you can enjoy a casual walk on a brisk winter day .
HOW TO GET THERE : Pardon Joslin Road in Exeter .
Weetamoo Woods
WHY GO ? This little East Bay wooded area has a loop trail of nearly six miles and is a hike that people of all skill levels can enjoy . Don ’ t forget to check out High Rock while you are there for beautiful views at the highest point in the woods .
