Research shows that reading for fun benefits kids in so many ways – it can make them happier and more resilient, while also helping to improve memory and vocabulary. A love of reading has also been associated with higher interpersonal and academic skills. Despite this, the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that fewer kids than ever are reading for fun.
But I believe parents have the power to instil a love of reading in their children from the very beginning. Classic collections are a perfect way to encourage your child to read more, especially when sharing books that you also loved as a child.
In my case, I have a close affinity to Roald Dahl, Dr. Seuss and Beatrix Potter as I grew up reading them. There’ s nothing more special than sharing something you enjoy with others. Here are three of my favourite box sets featuring these authors, currently available at Costco.
The power of rhyme
The Wonderful World of Dr. Seuss( Item 155528, available in warehouses and on Costco. com. au) is a classic collection of illustrated stories from the best-selling author Dr. Seuss. It features 20 of his most beloved stories, including all-time favourites such as The Cat in the Hat, Horton Hears a Who and Oh, the Places You’ ll Go!, which makes it the perfect addition for both die-hard Seuss fans and new readers alike.
This collection will take the readers into the wildly imaginative and zany world of Dr. Seuss as you meet an array of colourful and comical characters. These hilarious tales are filled with rollicking rhymes and will have you laughing out loud.
Strength of character
Roald Dahl is one of the most beloved children’ s authors. He has written many classic books that have stood the test of time. The Roald Dahl Collection 16-Book Box Set
( Item 47830, available in warehouses and on Costco. com. au) is a great way to introduce children to his works.
The books in this collection come in a keepsake slipcase, which houses many of Dahl’ s best-loved novels, such as Matilda, The BFG and James and the Giant Peach, all with Quentin Blake’ s iconic illustrations.
Dahl’ s books are full of humour and imagination and contain important life lessons, such as the importance of kindness, courage and perseverance. I also like that his books feature young heroes who overcome challenging situations, revealing their good nature and character.
Animal adventures
Beatrix Potter published her first book in 1902. Since then, children everywhere have read and loved Peter Rabbit and his friends. To me, Peter Rabbit has been an icon of children’ s literature. This tale sees Peter at his most adventurous, cheekiest and lovable as
