Every Tuesday in January ( the 2nd , 9th , 16th , 23rd and 30th ) you can meet with a representative from ODHS ( the Oregon Department of Human Services ), who may be able to help you with housing or other social service matters . The representative will be at the library from 10 a . m . to 12 p . m ., and again after lunch , from 1 to 3 p . m . No appointments or signups are needed , but do give us a call on the day , just to double check that the ODHS folks haven ’ t made last-minute plans elsewhere .
Also on every Tuesday in January ( as above ), feel free to join us for free informal English classes at the library from 10 a . m . to 12 p . m . This is a beginning English ( as a second language class ), but anyone wanting to improve their English skills may attend . No sign-up necessary — just drop in !
Our fun PROFILES lectures will continue on Wednesday , Jan . 3 at 11 a . m . Taught by emeritus Professor Bill Thierfelder , this online program , “ Failure ? Who Says ?” focuses on the curious topic of posthumous renown . Fame is fickle and elusive . It teases , then flits away . At its most mischievous , it can arrive with aplomb after those seeking it have already died . This program explores the posthumous fame of cultural giants like Melville , Bach , Van Gogh and Dickinson who were practically unknown in their lifetimes despite often prodigious effort and output . None of them could have

known just how famous they would become after death . How profound it is to consider what unknown legacy may await us after we ’ re gone . The takeaway ? Never give up ! Sign up to receive the Zoom meeting code , but act quickly ! www . wilsonvillelibrary . org / classes .
Our trendy First Friday Films matinee continues on Friday , Jan . 5 at 3 p . m . January ’ s film is “ A Haunting in Venice .” In post-World War II Venice , Detective Hercule Poirot , now retired and living in his own exile , reluctantly attends a seance . But when one of the guests is murdered , it is up to the former sleuth to once again uncover the killer . Join us for this free movie , along with snacks , popcorn , and now … even padded chairs ! No reservations necessary — just show up !
On Saturday , Jan . 13 the dulcet tones of our ever-popular BookNotes Concert Series reignite with our latest offering . Musician Peter “ Spud ” Spiegel will host a performance featuring mandolins and more , in a variety of genres , including Bluegrass , Latin , Celtic and even a crowd-pleasing melange that Spud likes to call Beachgrass . Free and open to all !
So if one holiday in January wasn ’ t enough , then how about TWO ? In honor of Dr . Martin Luther King Jr ., the library will be closed all day ( along with all other city offices ) on Monday , Jan . 15 . See you on the 16th !
On Thursday , Jan . 18 , how about joining us for a refreshing walk in the frosty ( but hopefully not rainy ) weather ? Our fashionable Walking Book Club departs from the library and journeys all the way to the deepest recesses of Memorial Park ! During the walk we ’ ll talk about this month ’ s book : “ The Storied Life of A . J . Fikry ” by Gabrielle Zevin ( or anything else you ’ ve been reading ), and perhaps compliment the clement weather . Meet in the library ’ s lobby at 1 p . m ., and then we will walk over to ( and through ) Memorial Park . Walks generally last about 45 minutes , and meet rain or shine .
On Saturday , Jan . 21 please attend our free Space Talk : OSIRIS-REx : To the Asteroid Bennu and Back Again . NASA ’ s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft ( Origins , Spectral Interpretation , Resource Identification , Security — Regolith Explorer ) is the first U . S . space mission to orbit a near Earth asteroid and return a sample from it safely to Earth . This seven-year mission to Bennu successfully returned its capsule to Earth last September . Analyzing the on-board sample will help scientists understand the early solar system , as well as the hazards and resources of near-Earth space . How did the mission go , and what have we learned from it so far ? Presented by a pair of docents from the Evergreen Air and Space Museum .
On Monday , Jan . 29 at 1 p . m ., super sleuth Malia will host Genealogy Club ! New members at any level are always welcome !
