2 THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER January 2023
CCC President ’ s Corner
By GARY NEWBORE
Let ’ s hope for a great 2023
Happy New Year everyone . I sincerely hope this is a great year for all our residents and that we are able to have a
NEWBORE normal year again ( COVID free ). The theme for this edition is “ Looking Forward .” January is the month that New Year ’ s resolutions proliferate , diets dominate , gym usage is up and restaurants usually have slow months . By February we often return to our old ways and our New Year ’ s resolutions are forgotten . I may not make it to February to forget mine !
Regarding two external issues that could affect our way of life : 1 . Nothing is resolved yet on the Boone Bridge tolling issue and Oregon Department of Transportation officials are not very forthcoming about details as they charge ahead . The comment period is open again and emails should be sent to oregontolling @ odot . oregon . gov . I understand they received approximately 300 emails and letters from Charbonneau residents in the last hearing period . Let ’ s send them more emails this time . Maybe it will do some good and maybe it won ’ t , but we need to keep trying . 2 . The second item is that airport folks are at it again trying a backdoor approach by getting Clackamas County to ask Metro to remove 800 acres south of Miley Road from urban reserve status . This would open the door for industrialization of this area , for a possible truck transfer facility and possible airport expansion . Again , we join the city of Wilsonville opposing this action .
In board and staff actions , bids for siding and window replacements at the event center ( old clubhouse ) were received . We have been accumulating funds in our reserve account for years for this project . As reported previously , the project would replace the old singlepane windows , the dry-rotted siding and paint the building . The siding would be painted a new color to coordinate with the exterior colors at the Activity Center . Porticos like the one over the front door at the Activity Center will be constructed over the front doors to the Event Center and the golf pro shop . A contract is expected to be awarded later this month . Work will probably start in January and be completed in May , causing an impact to usage of the facility during those months . Permitting efforts are also underway for improvements to Edith Green Park and for the new tennis / pickleball facility that will provide more indoor tennis and pickleball courts .
A public fundraising effort to buy a 6.5-foot-tall bronze statue of Sacajawea holding her son , Jean Baptiste Charbonneau , the origin of our name , was kicked off in late November . If purchased , the statue would be mounted on a concrete pad in a landscaped area outside of the Activity Center and would serve to reinforce our community ’ s name . The bronze statue , made in a Joseph , Oregon foundry , I believe , is simply stunning .
I started this article talking about New Year ’ s resolutions and diets . Thinking ahead to my January diet , toward the end of December , I decided to start a project to clean out the garage freezer . Well , OK , I ate the ice cream . Happy 2023 everyone .
We honored our vets
BY JENNIFER WAGGONER Charbonneau veterans gathered at the country club Event Center on Veterans Day to honor both current and past military personnel who fought and served for the United States . The Rotary Club of Wilsonville provided a pancake and omelet breakfast . Boy Scout Troop 194 presented the colors and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance .
Charbonneau would like to thank the many volunteers who made this event successful . We would also like to thank the Rotary Club of Wilsonville for supplying the ingredients and preparing the breakfast , Boy Scout Troop 194 and Wilsonville High School students for helping with the clean-up , Mark Newell from the Oregon Department of Veteran Affair and Clackamas Country Veteran Service Officer Gus Bedwell , who served as our guest speaker .
