We will issue calls to artists and volunteers for this year ’ s festival in the spring

Happy New Year ! It seems like yesterday it was 1999 and we were worrying about the apocalypse that would happen when the clocks and computers all
MCLAIN crashed because they
weren ’ t programmed to reach 2000 . I was working in marketing and giving speeches on “ food trends for the new millennium ,” and joking about getting a flying car and trying out a hoverboard , from the movie “ Back to the Future Part II .” That movie was released in 1989 and imagined a future 2015 . In 2023 we still don ’ t have time travel , flying cars , hoverboards or self-drying clothes , but we do have devices like smartphones and smart-watches that have capabilities that Marty McFly couldn ’ t have imagined . That just goes to show that movies and science fiction can only go so far . This new year our cars and trucks are still land-based but essentially computers on wheels , and there have been advances in other areas that were just dreams back in 2000 .
So instead of looking back to those fictional goals , this New Year suggests a look forward — to succeeding with a New Year ’ s resolution , starting a new project , taking a big trip , or , at a certain age , making it to the next landmark . For Charbonneau Arts Association , 2023 promises new opportunities with the Music Stage Series during the year , and , with the addition of music students to our festival music stage , the Charbonneau Arts and Music Festival in September . Planning has already begun . The Sponsor Recruitment team , led by Eric Hoem and Mary Closson , has devised a new sponsorship program that we expect will result in new and expanded sponsorships that help to support our festival and enhance our ability to donate to schools . We are developing the marketing materials for launch in the New Year . In addition to a call to artists in the spring , we will issue a call to volunteers to fill some important spots left by retiring members of the Festival Organizing Committee . Foremost among them is Shirley Hoem , who had been in charge of the Artisan Vendor Show for several years , and also managed the Volunteer Committee with the assistance of the late Pat Tewell . Shirley ’ s contribution to the festival has been huge , and we regretfully acknowledge her desire to cut back , with the hope that we can find a volunteer to fill her shoes . If you are interested in joining our team or know someone who might like to join in the fun , please contact me at cathi @ mclainco . com .
Elaine Swyt has now assumed the role of CAA president and seeks a replacement to take over the festival ’ s silent auction . This is a fun assignment and offers the volunteer the opportunity to interface with dozens of artists , artisans and musicians . She welcomes an intern to learn the ropes . Call her or email her directly to find out more about this : Eswyt @ mediaphysics . com .
Our board is pleased to welcome new member Sue Traeger . Sue is an artist and retired teacher who recently transplanted to Charbonneau from Silverton . She served on the Keizer Art Association Board and helped put on monthly art shows . We are excited to take advantage of Sue ’ s experience and enthusiasm .
As of this writing , we ’ re still waiting to hear if we were successful in securing grants from Clackamas County and the Regional Arts & Culture Coalition . We will be applying for an additional grant from the city of Wilsonville . Our success in securing grant funding helps to offset expenses and increase the amount we can donate to the high school arts programs . We are investigating some larger grant opportunities for the Sacajawea Project through the city of Wilsonville and other resources that don ’ t conflict with our smaller but equally important grant opportunities .
Be sure to check out the Art Wall in the Activities Center lobby , where Charbonneau artist Anna Lancaster is the current featured artist . Anna is an award-winning oil painter whose works include portraits and still life as well as plein air landscapes . We are very lucky to be able to enjoy her gallery-quality work here in Charbonneau . She markets her work through her company , Anna Lancaster Fine Art , and displays it in area galleries as well . See the expanse of her work at annalancasterfineart . com .
