Walnut boats
By Ella Rawson
These charming little boats that can be made out of materials from your own home are a great idea to make on a rainy day and use them after the rain stops. These small boats can float! You can play with them in puddles, the sink or any place filled with water. You can make them out of things straight from nature or from things in your kitchen. Here is how to make these great pastimes.
Step 1. Find some walnuts in your house or by a walnut tree! (PS there are only black walnuts that grow wild in the Maryland area. Be careful when cutting them open since they will stain your skin!)
Step 2. Cut the walnut in half and empty its insides.
Step 3. Fill the walnut with play dough or with melting wax (let the wax dry first)
Step 4. Take a piece of fabric\leaf\paper that can look like a flag and wrap one side around the toothpick\twig
Step 5. You can personalize your boat too! Write your name or a word on the flag of your boat or paint the shell on your boat and make it you!
Now that you know how to make these awesome little boats you can start making batches of them. And you don't need to keep them all for yourself. You can give them to your friends, family and teachers and have your own walnut boat fun!
