Trends in volcanic events on Anak Krakatau , Indonesia , and their implications for monitoring and prediction | Daniel Jones
Historical Volcanic Explosivity Index ( VEI ) values , volcanic hazards and seismic data from 2019 were collated from bulletin reports and analysed to identify their potential for predicting future volcanic activity at Anak Krakatau , Indonesia . VEI strength has decreased since 1883 , and explosive eruptions remain common . Seismic data from 2019 did not reveal any trends , although literature indicated it to be a useful short-term predictor ; the raw data appears to be better than warning reports for anticipating volcanic activity . Future studies should consider the feasibility of integrating long-term gaseous flux , thermal activity and ground deformation monitoring into volcano observatories .
Applied Behavioural Analysis - the Autism ' Therapy ' | Emma Crabb
Applied Behaviour Analysis ( ABA ) has long been seen as the ‘ gold standard ’ of autism treatment , using positive reinforcement over many hours a week to change behaviour . It works , but at what cost ? This talk will explore the anti-ABA viewpoint held by many autistic adults , discussing issues around compliance , social norms , ‘ masking ’ and mental health . It will consider the therapy ’ s behaviourist roots and its apparent successes , alongside discussion of autism theory , recipient experiences and the neurodiversity movement . Finally it will review the therapeutic alternatives , and question what – if any – place ABA holds in modern society .

Humanising the Inhuman : Considering the Anthropomorphism of Artificial Intelligence in Post-2010 Science Fiction Media | Isobel Elrick
Anthropomorphism refers to the assignation of human characteristics to inanimate or non-human objects ; whilst this concept is not new with relation to artificial intelligence ( AI ) in science fiction , post-2010 science fiction media provides an examination of this concept within the context of modern society , where AI is arguably prevalent in our everyday lives . With this context in mind , this presentation will consider the way that science fiction media productions anthropomorphise AI characters , particularly in the cases of the Synth characters in Channel 4 ’ s Humans ( 2015-18 ) and the character of Ava in Alex Garland ’ s Ex Machina ( 2014 ).
How Barry Jenkins film ' Moonlight ' ( 2016 ) subverts the stereotype that black people cannot swim and reunites the image of the black body with water | Sarah Powell
There is a stereotype that black people cannot swim ( León , 2019 ). Before the Slave Trade , swimming was a part of Africans lives ( Dawson , 2006 ). In the 20th Century Black People were denied recreational swimming , so couldn ’ t learn to swim . The image of the Black Body with water evokes fear since drowning rates are higher in Black communities ( Wolcott , 2019 ). This paper examines how Barry Jenkins 2017 film Moonlight reclaims the image of the Black Body in and with water . Water is a prevalent theme throughout the film , the protagonist Chiron ’ s connection to the water reflects his connection with his sexuality .
Heart failure ( HF ) is a progressive and complex chronic disease that is prevalent amongst older adults ; therefore , HF patients require quality care . Telehealth is the use of technology by healthcare professionals to remotely monitor and manage the health of patients . The use of telehealth by HF patients results in early detection of deterioration in HF patients , and this leads to timely intervention and treatment . Also , telehealth use by HF patients leads to improved self-management of their condition . The perception of HF patients and nurses on the use of telehealth can affect its acceptance in providing quality care for HF patients .
