Unspoken Truth | Adenike Odukoya
Depression is not something to be spoken of in an African household . That ’ s because in the minds of the older generation it does not exist . Due to this phenomenon , it places the upcoming generation of black Africans to withhold from expressing their deep thoughts and true feelings . In this presentation , I will be discussing reasons why the previous generation have been accustomed to this belief and how us as the new-gen can overcome this and educate our parents to understand the seriousness of depression in society today .
Violence as a Symptom of Rootlessness : The Relationship Between Youth and Parent Culture in Gautam Malkani ' s Londonstani | Piyapatch Sujiwarodom
The relationship between the youth and the parent culture is a complex discourse of resistance and re-identification , translation and exploitation . In Gautam Malkani ’ s Londonstani , the youth and the parent cultures appropriate different aspects of the hegemonic culture , integrating them into their lives in ways that leave them at odds with each other . The paper seeks to examine the effects of the ways in which members of the youth culture , as ‘ second-generation immigrants ’, navigate and reconcile the values of the hegemonic British culture with those of the parent culture . Violence in Gautam Malkani ’ s Londonstani is symptomatic of cultural rootlessness .
