Medical jargon during pregnancy and birth: does this affect the birth experience? | Madeleine Shackelton Click here to view the poster. Throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods, women and their partners learn a great deal about pregnancy, birth and the female body. Midwives encourage women to read up on different topics to enable the women to make choices about their own care. Although women are understanding more about this period in their lives, they often have many questions. Healthcare professionals are still using medical language when discussing women’s cases and often are not explaining this to the women. Communication plays such an important role throughout this highly emotional time but is the use of medical jargon affecting women’s experience of birth? The pre-eruptive magma plumbing system of the Lower Pollara eruption, Salina, Aeolian Islands | Jade Shannon The Pollara deposits are found on the island of Salina, located in the Aeolian archipelago, north of Sicily. Petrographical and bulk rock geochemical data from the juvenile components of the proximal Lower Pollara succession has been obtained, spanning the entire stratigraphic sequence of the eruption. This data will be used in conjunction with new petrographical information on the magmatic cumulate rocks and crustal xenoliths in the succession to provide new insights on the pre-eruptive magmatic processes and the magma plumbing system of one of the most powerful eruptions in the geological history of Salina. Clinical Indicator of Infection, Human C-Reactive Protein (hCRP), and It’s Role in Immune System; A Structural Bioinformatics Study on Binding Interactions of hCRP | Soner Tehelcioglu Click here to view the poster. Human C - Reactive Protein (hCRP) is a protein that is synthesised in the liver in response to infection and inflammation. Clinically it is used as an indicator of infection and it is thought to be a predictor of cardiovascular diseases. Structurally, hCRP is made up of 5 sub units and it is known to have binding interactions with Calcium, C-Polysaccharide and C1q of innate immune system. Bioinformatic investigation of hCRP focused on these binding interactions of hCRP through its amino acid sequence in order to gain a better structural understanding of the protein and its role in human body. The study was carried out alongside the independent undergraduate research project of Natural Sciences course which involved crystallisation of hCRP for further crystallography studies. Using Flinder's sensitive line rats as a model for human depression | Imaan Waqar The Flinder's sensitive line rats are studied to find out if they can be competent models of depression in humans. Two behavioural tests are used with control rats and FSL rats to test this, . the Double-H maze and a forced swim task. The results show that the FSL rat displays similar behaviour to that of a human with depression and can be subject to experiment to produce significant data. Abstracts 123
