Abstract

This article provides further analysis and reflection on the responses to three questions posed to delegates in the opening presentation at the Becoming Well Read Symposium ( Online ) 2022 . A thematic analysis on the responses was used to extract key themes and subthemes related to each question . Six subthemes were identified in relation to academic reading : barriers and opportunities ; reading and communication activities ; collaborative reading curation ; creating a reading culture ; embedding collaborative reading practice into the subject curriculum ; and making reading visible . The overall conclusion from further analysis and evaluation of each subtheme is twofold . Firstly , it signals the important role academic reading has in providing educational , psychological and sociological benefits within Higher Education . Secondly , it highlights the value of reading activities that encourage collaboration and inclusivity . Strategies to assist development of academic reading are provided throughout to continue to support the important role of academic reading practice within Higher Education .

Introduction

Reflective practice is vital across all disciplines and none more so than teaching and learning . Reflective practice can take many forms but , as suggested by Loughran ( 2002 ), for reflective practice to be genuine , there needs to be opportunities to break through hidden and embedded assumptions by looking at situations through the lens of others . Therefore , following the opportunity for three educators to present their own reflections on their reading practice for the academic year 2021 / 22 at the Becoming Well Read Symposium 2022 ( BWR22 ), there was scope to gain invaluable insight into ideas and suggestions from other staff across the sector about academic reading . Each presenter provided a question related to an aspect of academic reading to delegates via a Padlet . Responses to the questions were analysed and reflected on in order to provide further insight and contribution to the discussion of academic reading practice within Higher Education . https :// doi . org / 10.21252 /
