Making space for reading in practicefocused programmes
Moira Maguire , Brid Delahunt , Ann Everitt Reynolds , Dundalk Institute of Technology
Deep reading forms the bedrock for professional development in most fields . Practitioners read to enhance their practice , and this is explicitly recognised and valued within many professional development frameworks . Yet academic reading is typically less visible in the curriculum than academic writing and research skills and its development generally receives less attention . This workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to consider the ways in which academic reading is situated in practice-focused curricula and how this might facilitate or impede future professional development . Drawing on examples from a range of disciplines and levels , the workshop will consider the question ‘ What messages about reading do our curricula send our students ?’ Participants will share practices and explore practical ways to make space for deep reading in practice-focused programmes .

Encouraging Engagement in Academic Reading by Destroying the Source
Rachel Gippetti , Plymouth College of Art
As a learning developer and a poet , I find it impossible not to find synergy between creative writing practices and more conventional academic practices / literacies . Through the development and delivery of extracurricular and in-programme workshops that employ creative writing techniques , I have found that a creative and impactful way to initiate and encourage academic reading is to deface , dismantle and appropriate the original text using the practice of cut-up poetry . This workshop presents some of the experiences and discoveries that have emerged through this activity . These include the negation of initial hurdles that students can stumble upon with academic reading , such as , avoidance , negative association and discouragement . It also has demonstrated the power to make way for new , literal and intuitive understandings and the development of a familiarity with the voice , vocabulary and themes within the source material . It provides a fresh , often playful , way of relating to the text , one which involves far less intimidation and a more personal and joyful association . Delegates will be invited to take part in a cut-up poetry activity themselves during the hour ; allowing them to experience the pleasure and surprise of this practice and invite discussion and reflection on possible further benefits / uses and how this could be employed and / or adapted within different institutions and contexts .

Rethinking the Book
Dave Middlebrook
Starting with the premise that the books we use in our classrooms were not designed for readers and reading , Dave will draw on all our BWR themes to provide us with classroom strategies to explore and questions to consider . Dave Middlebrook invented the textmapping method and pioneered the use of scrolls and textmapping for classroom instruction . He has been collaborating in classrooms and conducting workshops for teachers since 1994 , and is the founder of The Textmapping Project : http :// www . textmapping . org /
