The second panel, The Dissection of a Ponzi Scheme, expanded attendees’ knowledge of the interplay between Ponzi schemes and insolvency. The program offered insights on a concept with which many of us have experienced in one form or another. Kathy Bazoian Phelps, (Diamond McCarthy) -- known as an authority in this area -- moderated the panel of Jovi Bohan (Stout Risius Ross), Laura Bouyea (Venable LLP), Melissa Davis (Kapila Mukamal), and Hon. Steven Rhodes (U.S. Bankruptcy Court (Ret.) Eastern District of Michigan). The panel pointed out red flags for detecting Ponzi schemes, discussed fraudulent transfer claims, and provided common approaches of fiduciaries for treatment of “net winners” and “net losers.”
After the luncheon and presentation of Rising Star Awards, conference attendees broke into groups for the afternoon Intermezzo Events. Whether visiting the historic Alcatraz Island, walking among the towering redwood trees of Muir Woods, or following an Edible Excursion tour of the artisan food vendors at the San Francisco Ferry Building, these Intermezzo Events were a memorable way to complete this fantastic Fall Conference.
