In addition to Panerai, several other watchmakers offer nautically themed ed timepieces linked to the America’ s Cup. Here are a few of them.
Ulysse Nardin debuted a yacht timer, a special edition of its Freak, and a limited-edition chronograph in conjunction with its America’ s Cup bid this year. The yacht timer, called the Marine Regatta, is the newest of the mechanical yacht timers set to race in Bermuda. The 44mm steel watch was developed with the advice of yachtsmen Loïck Peyron and Iain Percy, both Ulysse Nardin brand ambassadors and members of the Artemis Racing team. You can find details about this watch within the feature starting on page 94 inside this issue in a separate story about yacht timers.
The Ulysse Nardin Diver Chronograph Artemis Racing( above) is a limited edition of 250 pieces. Engravings of the Artemis Racing catamaran decorate the dial while the Artemis Racing logo appears both in the 30-minute counter at 9 o’ clock, and on one of the two bracelet elements. Inside, the watch is a true dive model: A rubberized screw crown adds water resistance to 200 meters while the unidirectional bezel and luminescent SuperLuminova markers on the dial improve visibility, all to diver watch specs.
A flash of yellow on the counters, markers and minute and hour hands aids also aides legibility; rubberized pushers make for a better
grip when a start or stop function is necessary. The watch’ s 45.8mm diameter steel case is coated with rubber and finished with a medallion on the caseback that illustrates the catamaran in a racing pose.
Finally, Ulysse Nardin has adorned a 35-piece edition of its FreakWing( above, right) with the features similar to those found within the Artemis catamaran: the upper bridge for the minutes is inspired by the internal structure of the rigid sail, while the texture of the rotating hours disc evokes the mesh net of the multihull. The bezel and case back are forged from carbon fiber.
With its spectacular tourbillon in the center, riding high with the Artemis Racing logo on the back, the new 45mm black titanium FreakWing displays hour and minutes, as well as the date at four o’ clock. It features the UlyChoc safety system, a new generation of shock absorbers.
With no crown, the two-part bezel performs the various functions: the first, it can be used to set the hours and minutes when rotated clockwise, and to set the date when rotated counter-clockwise. The lower bezel, on the case back, winds the mainspring barrel – designed for a power reserve of eight days.
