Given America ’ s mood , however , interest in the literary arts began to wane . So it was no surprise that Ivy Leaf ® soon began giving greater attention to larger political and social issues .
Taking A Public Policy Stance
During the war years of the 1940s , the demands on American women heightened as the then typical male breadwinners were sent overseas . The number of Alpha Kappa Alpha chapters grew , and the sorority began to increasingly use resources to tackle pressing issues . Ivy Leaf ® was right in step with this , through reports from the field and articles to spread the word .
Another program of the 1940s that saw frequent coverage in the pages of Ivy Leaf ® is the founding of the National Non-Partisan Council on Public Affairs . Alpha Kappa Alpha joined forces with several other Black sororities and fraternities to create this ground-breaking organization that initially led the fight against segregation in the armed forces and public accommodations . Again , Ivy Leaf ® serves as the authoritative record on these initiatives , including many articles which discussed the role of Black women in wartime mobilization .

With this new-found actiivism within the magazine ’ s pages also came a new look : a cover facelift , more photography inside , and a retooling of the sections and features . In addition , the magazine ’ s editorial offices were centralized at the new AKA Chicago headquarters building ; many duties once requiring volunteers were now able to be handled by headquarters staff .
As the 1960s continued to make news on two opposing fronts , the domestic “ War on Poverty ” and the overseas Vietnam War , circulation of Ivy Leaf ® first reached ther 10,000 members mark . Today we currently have more than 100,000 active members in over 1,037 chapters .
