as an annual publication to communicate AKA achievements among chapters is now a nationally recognized chronicle of not just AKA events but also the issues concern- ing , and accomplishments of , America ’ s most prominent Black women professionals .
Visionary From The Beginning
When Soror Green took office in 1919 , AKA had no national communications medium . The following year , she envisioned a “ yearbook of ourselves ” to document AKA people and programs , and presented her plan at the 1920 Boulé in Cleveland — promising delivery of the first issue by the 1921 Boulé in Indianapolis .
Without any budget , and by typing the manuscript herself , she and her small committee met the challenge and saw Ivy Leaf ® immediately adapted as the official organ of AKA . ( It was not until 1923 that she was advanced
remibursement for printing .) This initial issue was 6 ” x 10 ”, 44 pages ( today the magazine averages 100 pages ), and included profiles of officers , chapter activities , member achievements , and even chapter songs and poetry . There were 335 members names and 17 chapters listed in the 1921 Ivy Leaf ® magazine .
In an introductory message from Sorors Green , Mitchell and Waters , the trio wrote , “ We take great pleasure in presenting this , the first volume of the IVY LEAF , to the sisters of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority . We realize that it is far from perfect and has a large number of inaccuracies , all of which are due to many causes , appreciable only by those who have completed similar undertakings .” They described the issue as “ not a money-making venture , but a labor of love and duty .”
Perhaps it was not exactly perfect , but it was both well received and surprisingly well-planned . The content of the first issue served to set into place the standardized departments introduced in the second issue : Boulé Notes , Chapter Notes , Special Articles , Poetry & Song , and Roster of Members . While no longer practical today , these early issues also contained the names of every member in every chapter .
While the work of the three-soror committee was exceptional , in fact all three viewed their activity as “ experimental ” — the beginnings of a permanent outreach to members . So for issue number two , they recommended that Ivy Leaf ® should have an Editor in Chief to provide direction ; the first soror to perform this task was Helen Perry . At the 1923 Boulé , the function was formalized , placing editorial authority with the Editor in Chief who would also be a Boulé Officer .
Additional sorors stepped up to serve as volunteers on the Ivy Leaf ® editorial committee , and by 1927 what began as a yearbook became a bi-annual publication circulated to seven AKA chapters . This schedule continued until 1930 when Ivy Leaf ® was able to adopt a quarterly cycle , with issues published in March , June , September and December .
During this decade , and into the 1930s , the Ivy Leaf ® had a notable second focus beyond member news and activities : encouraging members in creative writing endeavors . Poetry and literature were prominently featured , and member works were sought out . The first Poetry and Literary Edition was published in 1927 , and offered cash prizes for the best short stories submitted by sorors . Many Ivy
