An Interview with

The Editorial staff of the Ivy Leaf ® presents to you an informal Soror Loraine Green conversation with Soror Loraine Green .

Soror Loraine Richardson Green , our second Supreme Basileus describes herself as being a " professional volunteer ." She has only spent a brief period of time teaching and serving as a social worker . But she has dedicated her life to helping others . " Her name has become synonymous with community and civic work ." Although a small framed woman , it ' s difficult to overlook her presence . The resonance of her voice , and her free moving conversations which are usually sprinkled with words of wisdom . and years of experience , immediately captivate the listener .
She is a woman on the go ( it ' s almost impossible to match her energy !). But more than this – she gives the feeling that not only does she know where she ' s going but she is always willing to share her thoughts on where she ' s been .
Born in Kansas City , Missouri to Joseph Henry and Sarah Barnett Richardson , Soror Green received her childhood education in that city also . She received the B . A . and M . A . Degrees from the University of Chicago . Soror Green is the widow of Judge Wendell E . Green . Her professional and other organizational affiliations although too numerous to list reflect her ever present desire to be personally involved in the perpetuation of human dignity .
She has watched Alpha Kappa Alpha grow in many ways . Soror Green personally typed the articles and assumed the financial cost for our first " IVY LEAF " which was published in 1921 . She was the first Supreme Basileus to receive a string of pearls for service rendered to the Sororily . Under her administration ( 1919-1923 ), Alpha Kappa Alpha adopted a coat of arms , modified its pin , began celebrating Founders ' Day , instituted the use of chapter charter and
Q : You have always shown a sincere interest in young people . Do you have any suggestions as to how Alpha Kappa Alpha might better utilize the talents of its undergraduate members ?
A : Oh , yes ! I would like to see us give our undergraduate members a greater opportunity on the national , level to develop their leadership potential . I know that this is being done to a great degree now . But we must continue and expand . After all , the sorority exists for college women - it began on a college campus . We take in hundreds of undergraduates each year , but the sororities and fraternities of today belong to the graduates .
I would like to see us give our undergraduates more opportunities to initiate programs which are of interest to them . We should encourage and motivate these sorors to participate in programs that will enhance their total educational program . I think that these young people are smart enough to recognize what their needs are . They can devise plans and programs for themselves , with our assistance . We must provide the stimulus for these efforts . We must continue to provide a place within the national organization where these needs can be expressed as we have previously done with our Leadership Seminars and other conferences .
Q : What do you foresee as being the role of Alpha Kappa Alpha from 1980- 2000 ?
A : Although many people are saying that sororities and fraternities have seen their day , that they are passe ,' over the peak and going down , I see Alpha Kappa Alpha continuing our efforts
As far as initiations and the establishment of chapters are concerned , we are definitely still growing . Due to integration and the 1954 Supreme Court decision , we are now entering many more college campuses . So , we have an opportunity to reach people in places where we were unable to reach them previously .
By 1980 ( which is just four years from now ), I believe that Alpha Kappa Alpha will be on the same level as we are now . But for the decades from 1980 to 1990 and from 1990 to 2000 , I am not certain what the interest of students may be . By this time , many may feel that sororities and fraternities are too narrow for their particular outlook on life .
Alpha Kappa Alpha will live forever . I cannot imagine America without an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority .
Q : Would you share with us some of your most fond memories of Alpha Kappa Alpha ?
A : They have all been so precious to me . Alpha Kappa Alpha has meant more to me ( outside my family ) than any other influence in my life , and believe me , I ' ve been some places and I ' ve done some things . Like my family , Alpha Kappa Alpha has remained special in my life . I can not single out any one memory . I can remember when we wept over the " IVY LEAF " and the string of pearls presented to me , and the plays we presented in the Loop ( down-town Chicago ) and of course the 1933 Boule . All of my memories about Alpha Kappa Alpha are so precious .
When I was appointed to the Chicago Board of Education , I was asked by a news reporter where did I get my start . I informed him that I got started by working with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority . He replied that AKA was just a social organization . To him I said , " that ' s what you think . Alpha Kappa Alpha is much much more !"
