Lawlah Certifies Democratic Electors
Soror Gloria Lawlah , Iota Gamma Omega Chapter member and president of Maryland ' s 10 Democratic Electors , stepped up to the governor ' s chamber ' s podium to certify the state ' s vote for the US president and vice president president-elect . Soror Lawlah has been a member of Iota Gamma Omega in Lanham , Md ., since 1983 and is a graduate of Hampton University . Upon her graduation from college , she was determined to change America , and she did just that with the certifying of the Democratic electors for the state of Maryland . As a long-term public servant and pioneer , she has served as a former state senator , former secretary of the Maryland Department of Aging , and many other roles in service to all mankind .
Lewis Appointed to Special Counsel
Soror Alicia Lewis of Theta Omega Omega Chapter in Silver Spring , Md ., was appointed to serve as Special Counsel to the Acting Chairman of the U . S . Commodity Futures Trading Commission ( CFTC ) in February 2021 . She is the third African American woman and fourth African American in the CFTC ' s 45-year history to hold such a position . She has served at the CFTC since 2009 in a number of senior roles- first as special counsel in the Division of Clearing and Risk and then in the office of International Affairs . Soror Lewis began her legal career as an associate in the securities enforcement and investment management practices at K & L Gates , where she worked for eight years . She holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania ' s Wharton School of Business undergraduate division , bachelor ' s , and William & Mary Law School , Juris doctorate .
Lucas-Darby Recognized as 2020 Community Champion
Soror Emma Lucas-Darby , Ph . D ., of the Alpha Alpha Omega Chapter , was recognized by University of Pittsburgh Medical Center , ( UPMC ) senior services with the Community Champion Award for her exceptional organizational leadership to improve the lives of seniors as board chairman of the Hill House Association . The Hill House forged strategic alliances with select cultural and social service organizations and for-profit businesses and partners . Under Soror Lucas-Darby ' s leadership and partnership with community organizations , the Hill House Association and program transition partners continued services to seniors in the Hill District of Pittsburgh , PA . UPMC stated the collaborations ' efforts to make the community a better place for seniors is exceptional . As board chairman , her leadership with the Hill House board focused on the wellbeing of older adults and the entire community . Soror Lucas-Darby is a Golden Soror and serves as the first anti-basileus .
Mays Elected Illinois Judge
Soror Celestia L . Mays , a member of Theta Omega Chapter , was elected a circuit court judge . Initially appointed to the bench by the Illinois Supreme Court , Soror Mays was previously elected an associate judge in December 2019 . Before joining the bench , Soror Mays was a solo practitioner for over 22 years , concentrating on family law . She has been active in the legal community and served as the centennial president of the Cook County Bar Association , the nation ' s oldest association of African American lawyers and judges . Soror Mays has received numerous honors , including the Crescent Moon Award for Legal Excellence from Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity , Inc ., Upsilon Sigma Chapter . In addition , she was named one of the 100 Women of Inspiration by Today ' s Chicago Woman magazine . Soror Mays was initiated at Beta Eta Chapter at the University of Michigan , Ann Arbor .
McCoy Selected as National Ambassador
Soror Ovuke ' Emonina McCoy , a charter member of Psi Xi Omega Chapter in Alabaster , AL , was recently selected as one of 21 national ambassadors for the American Heart Association ' s signature initiative known as Go Red for Women- Real Women , Class of 2021 . She will serve in this role with her mother . The announcement was made on February 1 , 2021 , with the start of Heart Health Month . In her role as a national AHA spokesperson , Soror McCoy appeared on the NBC Today Show and WVTM 13 , along with her mother , to share their stories of heart disease and increase awareness of heart health . Soror McCoy will serve in this volunteer role for one year with various national speaking engagements . She is a two-year heart transplant warrior .
McMillan Receives the Ella Jo Baker Award
Soror Beverly McMillan of Iota Xi Omega Chapter in Albuquerque , NM , was chosen by the Africana Studies Program at the University of New Mexico to receive the Ella Jo Baker Award . This award has been given each year since 1985 during Black History Month . The honor exemplifies individuals who strive to help people understand their power and purpose , who demonstrate a life of sacrifice and commitment to a larger collective struggle , and somebody who empowers others to lead and take a personal stake in the battle for freedom , justice , and equality . Soror McMillan is currently marketing and fundraising for Albuquerque Family Advocacy Center under United Way of Central New Mexico . In addition , she has set up a partnership with the CNM Ingenuity Coding Camp program , which provides a 15-week coding class for individuals who have been exposed to interpersonal violence . Soror McMillan is from Akron , OH .
Mizell-Price Acknowledged for Integrating Duke Nursing Faculty
Soror Marva Mizell-Price , Golden and Charter soror for Mu Omicron Omega Chapter in Chapel Hill , NC , was acknowledged during the 2021 90th Anniversary year-long celebration of Duke University School of Nursing for changing its history when she integrated the faculty in 1996 .
