Coney Appointed as Hearing Officer
Psi Omega Chapter member Theresa Wilson Coney was appointed as a hearing officer for the Board of Bar Overseers for Massachusetts ' Supreme Judicial Court . Soror Coney , who was recently selected as the first and only Racial Equity Trainer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Public Defender ' s Office , serves on the Committee for Public Counsel Services . In this role , she helps provide legal representation to 285,000 clients annually in criminal , delinquency , children and family law , and mental health cases . In addition , she is responsible for training 700 employees , including 425 staff lawyers and thousands of private lawyers , on racial equity and addressing racism in the justice system . Her term as a hearing officer will last for three years .
Cowthran Honored as Alumni of the Month
Soror Beryl Cowthran was honored by her peers as Wiley College Alumni of the Month . Soror Cowthran was initiated into Phi Chapter in 1996 . She is an active member of Delta Lambda Omega Chapter , where she serves as # CAP SM chairman . With 20 years of experience in the medical field , she has experienced many " firsts ." Soror Cowthran was the first African American cardiac sonographer during her previous employment . She serves as a guest lecturer and encourages diversity in S . T . E . M . She was one of four persons chosen to participate in the Leadership Development Institute for Veterans Affairs future leaders . She holds a BS in biology , BS in cardiopulmonary sciences , MA in industrial / organizational psychology , and a Ph . D . in Christian counseling . She serves her community as pastor of Grace Hill Church .
Culpepper Oversees Worldwide Beauty Brands
Soror Erica Culpepper , general manager of L ' Oreal Multi-Cultural Beauty , oversees the US and Global Business Unit . Her career has spanned over 20 years , with 15 years managing businesses across L ' Oreal Paris , Maybelline New York , Garnier , and now Multi- Cultural Beauty . Throughout her career , she has driven strategic initiatives across marketing , sales , acquisitions , business development , and organizational readiness / change management . She has a track record of successful product launches and brand campaigns . She also led the acquisition and integration of Carol ' s Daughter , bringing the natural hair pioneer into the L ' Oreal family , helping to expand L ' Oreal ' s leadership within the multi-cultural market . She is at the helm of a robust portfolio that helps shape , define , and foster a beauty movement that honors the creativity and individuality of black beauty across our glorious skin tones , hair textures , body types , and lifestyles . Soror Culpepper is a champion of women ' s empowerment .
Currington Recognized as Oldest Living HBCU Alumna
Soror Nan Moone Currington was born July 23 , 1916 , and graduated from Cheyney State College in 1942 with a bachelor ' s degree in home economics . Later she attended Penn State University and received a master ' s degree in counseling supervision and administration from Bucknell University . She was a Diamond Member initiated in 1946 in Alpha Alpha Omega Chapter . In 1950 she began her career with Pittsburgh Public Schools , where she worked as a teacher , advisor , counselor , vice-principal , and dean of students before retiring in 1981 . She is a member of the Mount Hope Presbyterian Church . She served on various committees at her church , but her favorite way to help was singing in the choir . Her attribute to longevity was dipping
her mother ' s cornbread into the liquid that came from greens because she didn ' t like to eat them . Her favorite song is " The Lord ' s Prayer ."
Douglas Receives Lifetime Achievement
Soror Minnie Douglas , of Theta Alpha Omega Chapter in Long Beach , California received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Long Beach Branch , NAACP 80th Anniversary Gala . She was recognized for her outstanding contributions and service to the NAACP and Long Beach community . She has served on numerous boards and works with several organizations , which focuses on enriching the lives of her community . She holds a bachelor and master ' s degree in nursing and a doctoral degree of education and administration . She is recognized as an expert in developing and implementing curriculum for nursing programs and was sought after by several colleges before joining Long Beach City College as a nursing program instructor and director , affirmative action coordinator , and coordinator of Student Health Services . Upon her retirement , she established a consulting business , in which she shared her knowledge base to increase the number of nurses in the workforce . Soror Douglas believes we are all placed here to help others and continuously seeks challenges and ways to be of service to her community .
Dowd-Burton Appointed to University Board of Trustees
Soror Angela Dowd-Burton of Omega Omega Chapter was recently appointed to the Drexel University Board of Trustees in Philadelphia , PA . She sets general , educational , and financial policies and ensures sound resource management in conjunction with the board . She is an award-winning business professional with over 25 years of diverse business experience and public service . She served in global roles in finance , supply chain management , and business development and held several local government positions . She founded and is currently president and CEO of Dowd-Burton and Associates . In addition , she has held various leadership positions in the private , public , and non-profit sectors . She is the founder of the Women ' s Leadership Forum of Greater Philadelphia , connecting corporate networks that empower and expand women ' s professional growth and advancement . Soror Dowd-Burton received the Philadelphia Tribune 2018 Women Achieving Recognition for significant contributions to her organizations and the community .
Fields Honored as First African American Principal
Golden Soror Lillie Fields , a charter member of Iota Nu Omega Chapter in Syracuse , NY , was honored as the first African American Principal in the Liverpool Central School District . In 1989 , Soror Fields was hired as principal for Nate Perry Elementary School . She remained in this position until her retirement in 1997 . Her role in this historical journey started with her early education in South Carolina , during the mid-1940s , when segregating students from elementary school to college was the law . At an early age , being a teacher was her interest . Her educational journey at Clark College prepared her to become a teacher and receive a master ' s in educational administration at Syracuse University . Growing up in the segregated south made her determined to become a teacher , director of parent involvement , and vice-principal before becoming principal in 1989 .
