Houston-Arterberry : Educator
Pittsburgh , PA – Soror Juanita Houston-Arterberry became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on February 23 , 2021 . Soror Houston-Arterberry attended Wilberforce University , where she earned a bachelor ' s degree in education and was initiated into the Zeta Chapter in 1961 . Her first teaching job was in Yellow Springs , Ohio , where she was the first African-American hired as a teacher . She also had her ministry working with children and music , serving as a musician whenever needed . In addition , Soror Houston-Arterberry organized the ' Little Angels " choir at Bethel A . M . E in Pittsburgh and wrote and directed plays for the children . She leaves to cherish her memory her 100 yr . old mother , Rosa Houston ; sister , Gwendolyn Vanleer ; nephew , Cedric Vanleer : brother-in-law , David Arterberry ; Adrienne Morris , adopted grandson ; Andrew Coleman , III , St . James A . M . E . Church , and Alpha Alpha Omega sorors .
Howell : Educator
Orangeburg , SC – Soror Helen Brunson Howell became an Ivy Beyond the Wall . In 1953 , she graduated from South Carolina State College ( University ) and was awarded a degree in business education . She also earned a master ' s degree . She worked for 18 years at South Carolina State College in the School of Education as an administrative assistant . In 1971 , she embarked on a teaching career in Orangeburg School District Five as a business education teacher . Following her retirement , she worked as a volunteer minority spokesperson for AARP . Soror Howell was a member of St . Luke Presbyterian Church , where she served as an elder and choir member ; Life Member of Beta Zeta Omega Chapter ; life member of NAACP ; life member of SCSU National Alumni Association ; member of SCSU State Club , SCSU season ticket holder ; South Carolina Education Association ; and Thirteen Hearts Bridge Club . She leaves to cherish her memories son , Marvin Jr . ( Henrietta ); daughter , Avis Howell Gathers ; granddaughter , Lenette Shanta , and a host of other relatives and friends .
Huckaby : Executive Library Director / Golden Soror / Life Member
Thomasville , GA – Soror Udella Huckaby became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on March 16 , 2021 . She was initiated into Gamma Upsilon Chapter at Savannah State College in December 1967 . She later attended Florida A & M and Florida State University . She worked 31 years in Florida , retiring in 2005 , and started a new career in her hometown of Moultrie , GA , achieving a position as an executive library director . Soror Huckaby was an active member of Bethel A . M . E Church and later Union Missionary Baptist Church , where she was a working member of Sunday School , Baptist training union , and usher board . She was active in her community , achieving life membership in NAACP , and enjoyed literature and the performing arts . As an active member of Lambda Xi Omega Chapter , she served on many committees and served as epistoleus and first anti-basileus . She was named Soror of the Year and became a Golden Soror . Cherishing her memory are family members , including sons Andrew Bell , Erran ( Nakeisha ) Davis , Stefano Huckaby ( Lasonda ) Davis ; grandchildren Soror Shekinah , Rebekah , Grace , and Paul ; six siblings , nieces , nephews , other relatives , friends , and sorors .
Ibe : Health / Public Relations
Tulsa , OK – Soror Nitonjia Lynnale Ibe became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on February 12 , 2021 . She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church , and because of her love for music , she was a member of the master ' s choir . She received her bachelor ' s degree in journalism at OSU and her master ' s degree in social work at the University of Oklahoma . Soror Ibe was initiated into Alpha Chi Omega Chapter in 2005 . She served on several committees which focused on health , and public relations continued her work and community service with the National Association of Black Journalists and The Oklahoma Department of Human Services . Survivors include her son , Marco Van Jr . Her daughter Jada Scott preceded her in death .
Irving : Retired Assistant Chief of Information / Golden Soror / Life Member
Raleigh , NC – Soror Pearl Ophelia McAlpin Irving became an Ivy Beyond the Wall . Soror Irving was a Life Member . Soror Irving was an active member of Alpha Theta Omega Chapter in Raleigh , NC , for 37 years . Over those years , she served on numerous committees , including Founder ' s Day , debutante ball invitations , audit , telephone , and February Personal Involvement , now ( PIN ). She became a Golden Soror in 1998 . Soror Irving had a distinguished career in library and information science . She retired from the State of North Carolina as the assistant chief of information . Twice , she was the recipient of the North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award , the highest award for state service granted by the Office of the Governor . Additionally , Soror Irving received the Black Caucus Award for Distinguished Service by the American Library Association .
Johnson : Retired Educator / Golden Soror / Life Member
San Diego , CA – Soror Carrie Lois Johnson became an Ivy Beyond the wall on January 28 , 2021 . She attended Wilberforce University in Wilberforce , OH , where she was initiated into Zeta Chapter . She met and married her husband Jessie Johnson , who was in the military . They were stationed in different locations around the country . She set her sights on higher education and received a Doctorate in Education from the University of Missouri . Soror Johnson joined the faculty at Lincoln University . Upon leaving Missouri , she and her husband returned to San Diego , where Soror Johnson became an Epsilon Xi Omega Chapter member and served as treasurer . In addition , she joined the staff at Lincoln High School as a counselor . She was a member of Christian Fellowship Church and an accomplished master bridge player . Soror Johnson was preceded in death by her husband . She leaves to cherish her memory , three children , family , friends , and Epsilon Xi Omega sorors .
