MISSISSIPPI HEALTH PROJECT II REVIVED
In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness month during October , Alpha Kappa Alpha brought its mobile mammography unit to provide free 3D mammograms to the Delta ’ s underinsured residents while we do our part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 through testing and vaccinations . A panel discussion on Alpha Kappa Alpha ’ s Breast Cancer Awareness Impact Day featured Supreme Basileus Glenda Glover ; Dr . Ala Stanford ; Soror Ora Douglass ; Soror Mary Williams ; Soror Angela Reed , breast cancer survivor ; Rozell Chapman , MD , Pediatrician of Dr . Arenia C . Mallory Community Health Center ; and Tao Wen , pharmacy manager at Walgreens . Soror Kelli Sharpe moderated the discussion .
Flu shots , standard vaccines for school-aged children , HIV testing , vital sign screening , and eye examinations were available across sites . As of October , we have provided more than 2,000 breast cancer screenings , 1,300 vaccinations and 88 booster shots .
" It was important to revive the Mississippi Health Project from the 1930s , especially during a global pandemic , to provide vaccines and COVID-19 testing in the Mississippi Delta where we knew the services were desperately needed ,” explained Soror Ora B . Douglass , International Program Committee Chair . " I [ was ] humbled and privileged to continue the legacy of my great-aunt , Dr . Dorothy Celeste Boulding Ferebee , and as a retired social worker , non-profit professional and two-time fallopian tube cancer survivor ,” said Janice Ferebee who served on the Mississippi Health Project II Steering Committee .
