Questions like –

Why are you doing Change Management?

Do you have a definition of what a Change is?

                          What category of changes do you allow?

                         

Do all changes follow the same lifecycle?

This is always a great place to start when looking to assist in producing a better Change Management process. The questions are based on what I call ‘The Three Must Haves of Change Management’. If you have all three, they are documented, agreed and signed-off, by all of the major stakeholders, then you are in a very solid position.

As a Service Management Consultant, I am able to go into an engagement and ask the basic questions around an organisation’s Change Management processes. This helps me to determine the ‘health’ of the process, and where issues may lie.

The Three ‘Must Haves’ of Change Management

Your process may benefit from some tweaking, but, by and large, Change Management should be running well and delivering a professional outcome supporting your Change Makers.

If you are missing any of these three Must Haves, then I can guarantee you your Change Management is having issues, and is operating in a ‘sub-optimal’ manner. Fear not; there are actions you can take. The main one is to review these Must Haves as they are currently operating. Discuss with the players, and draw up an honest assessment of where you are at, and what you need to do.

So, let’s have a look at these three critical elements, and why they are Must Haves.
