“ Of course , sustainability is not for free since , in order to make a polymer like the one we offer , a whole series of operations and processes must be carried out that are not normally necessary for other types of material , so the price is inevitably a little higher .” This is a clear concept , as no sustainable product can be less expensive or even on a par with the cost of a product obtained from virgin raw materials : perhaps this could have been the case a few years ago , when , however , the industry did not require , from recycled polymers , the high performance levels that are expected today from a post-consumer or post-industrial recyclate , able to compete with pure raw materials .
AN EXPANDING RANGE „ The Renycle family of products is constantly updated in order to meet the daily needs of our customers , and is used in the most varied sectors , ranging from automotive to electric & electronic , from e-mobility to industrial goods , just to name a few examples , for each of which
ad-hoc grades are formulated . This means responding to the needs of the industry for materials that , in addition to bring benefits in terms of environmental sustainability , also incorporate properties that make the product suitable for a specific application ” commented Erico Spini , Marketing & Application Development Director . “ Today we record a demand from fairly mature sectors for which we have already developed suitable materials , for example for cable holders for cars , based on PA6 reinforced with 15 percent glass fibres . Just as we decided to focus on some products intended for newer areas , such as the electric mobility sector , with charging plugs that today contain a certain percentage of recyclate and also a flame retardant : in this case we must pay particular attention to the origin and quality of the raw material that is put into the formulation , rather delicate and demanding .”
DEMAND ON THE RISE Still with regard to the automotive sector ,
as Spini pointed out : “ Today more or less all OEMs are asking RadiciGroup for materials with a low environmental impact , a demand that is literally exploding : obviously each of them would like a very high percentage of these low-impact polymers , but this is not always possible , especially when it comes to technical components , where it is necessary to find the right balance between performance and environmental compatibility ”. „ In the near future , the challenge for us will be to be able to meet the growing demand for recycled materials , enhancing those sources that to date are not taken into account at all for a whole series of reasons , including the fact that , to be treated , they require hefty investments and resources ” – he concluded – “ I hope , in this sense , that even the authorities responsible for helping the industry to increase the level of sustainability , will consider the importance of many materials that , today , are destined for landfills or waste-to-energy plants .”
