Hornets ready to build off last years success
6 | HUNTSVILLE LIVING | FOOTBALL PREVIEW 2024
Huntsville ended the year with the run of a lifetime on the football field .
After a 10-game regular season , the Hornets found themselves in the third-seed out of District 10 , 5A-DII as the playoffs neared . Turns out , that district was one of the best in 5A-DII as Lake Creek , Richmond Randle and Huntsville all made the third round . The Hornets eliminated Randle in the regional round and Port Neches-Groves ended Lake Creek ’ s season in the same weekend .
PN-G eliminated the Hornets the next week as the Indians wrapped up the year as the Class 5A-DII State Champion two weeks later .
But the run was something that could impact the Hornets in several ways this year .
Huntsville tabbed an extra four games of game experience , but that led to four extra weeks of practice . That gave the Hornets four extra weeks of knowledge towards this year .
“ With the amount of experience and depth we have coming back , we feel really good ,” Huntsville head coach Rodney Southern said . “ We went on a run that was probably unexpected , not necessarily from the coaches , but the 5-5 finish . I think this year is different because of the amount of experience . The guys that are seniors will be three-year starters and have done the things you need them to for the program to be successful . You look forward to that , along with the new guys that are moving up from junior varsity .”
Those guys that have three years of varsity experience include linebacker Shiloh Jones .
Jones will be a four-year varsity member and has been a huge asset for the Huntsville defense . His junior year saw 109 tackles last year on a defense that was the reason they made the playoff push .
With the defense being the backbone of this team , the Hornets will also rely on Mu ’ Koryc Norman over the middle to run down the ball .
