Lions poised for success with strong senior class
After moving back to six-man football for the 2023 season the Lions did not have a place to call home . Alpha Omega Academy football was held without a district due to the change and , in turn , was ineligible for the postseason .
But now that has changed . With realignment taking place , AOA has joined TAPPS six-man region II , District 5 with former schools like Allen Academy , Beaumont Legacy and Faith West in the district , the Lions have some familiar foes to battle .
“ I ’ m excited about the senior class and we have a lot of guys who have played together for a long time ,” Lion coach Jeff Norris said . “ We have seniors everywhere so it ’ s setting up to be a good year .”
With experience last year with six-man football , this season is going to rely heavily on the guys that are returning .
AOA will return nearly its entire team from last year but the key will be getting guys back at the main spots . Will Winn returns as the quarterback , Isaac Thompson returns as the running back and Zach Steffa as the leading receiver .
On the defensive end , the Lions have its leading tackler back in Lukas Collier , who will be a four-year member of this team .
The only part that the Lions have to work out is the secondary which gave up a lot of deep plays last year .
“ We ’ ve got guys that are going to line up at the same spots they lined up last year . We have guys back that are going to be doing what they did last year , so I think it will be the familiarity ,” Norris said . “ We can grow from last year . Guys are comfortable with what they are doing .”
Winn is going to be a staple for the Lions ’ offense this season . In his first year back in the six-man ranks since junior high , he racked up a strong 967 yards and 11 touchdowns through the air . His favorite target became Steffa as they connected 17 times for 366 yards .
With all the experience coming from the guy under center , Norris would like to see the entire offense getting reps as everybody can touch the ball in six-man play .
