Tempo per L’Autunno
by Rose Brocato
Do you want to know what events
are taking place in Cefalu, Sicily,
now and in the fall? Then you need
to download the app for Cefalu and
visit the website for the New Orleans
Cefalutana Society. Hopefully, these
hot, humid days will soon be over
and we can enjoy the fall season.
Of course, here in New Orleans we
search for that little bit of breeze in
the air throughout the fall. In Cefalu,
the temperatures average a high of
74 degrees high and a low of 67; in
New Orleans we can only hope for a
low of 74 degrees! You can always
get on a plane and visit Cefalu to
see where your ancestors are from
and take a relaxing walk along the
seawall.
The Societa Italiana di Mutua
Beneficenza Cefalutana and Cabri-
ni High School have chosen this
year’s winning essay, which was
submitted by Eleanora Bullock. She
will receive a $1,000 scholarship
to be used next year for her senior
year expenses at Cabrini. Her essay
touched on immigration and her
grandfather’s experience as an im-
migrant from Cefalu. The Cefalutana
Society is very proud to be able to
award this scholarship to deserving
juniors anticipating their last year of
high school. Eleanora is the fourth
recipient of this special scholarship.
Congratulazioni, Eleanora!
On March 25, the Cefalutana
Society held its annual “Day at The
Races” at the New Orleans Fair-
grounds. With 33 Cefalutana mem-
bers in attendance, a great time was
had by all. In honor of the Cefalutana
Society, a race was run by the horse
Ninety-One Assault, ridden by the
jockey Shaun Bridgmohan. It was a
great opportunity for our members to
enjoy some fun horse racing and one
another’s company. The members
in attendance were Julie Balderes,
Catherine Barberito, Joe Battaglia,
Niki Brown, Bernadine Carusa,
Pepper Carusa, Charlie Catanese,
Rosemary Catanese, Charles Cherry,
Donna D’Antoni, Gerry D’Antoni,
Sal D’Antoni, Joann D’Antoni, John
D’Antonio, Edna DeSilva, E Fabach-
er, Isabella Finnell, Peter Gabb,
Barbara Gauthier, Joan Holub, Ceci
Johnson, Teresa Lamanna, Bob and
Chetta Laverne, David and Romona
Matassa, Sal Piediscalzo, Joseph
Scholl, Sal Serio, Andrea Tosclair,
Sarah Ulmer and Sylvia Ulmer.
On August 5, the Cefalutana So-
ciety held its very favorite event of
the year. The 131st annual Festa—
honoring Gesu Salvatore, the patron
saint of Cefalu—was attended by
more than 150 members. Mass was
celebrated by Reverend Michael
Marascalco, who is a member of
the society. Two new members to
the Cefalutana Society, Megan and
Lauren Bordelon, sang at the mass.
Then members enjoyed lunch at
Andrea’s Restaurant in Metairie
with a delizioso meal of cheese
ravioli, Italian salad, and a choice
of spaghetti and meatballs, chicken
grandem, or fresh catch Ponte Vec-
chio. Of course, our favorite singer,
Joe DeNone entertained us with
Italian favorites such as “Volare”
and “O Sole Mio.” Some of our new
members who attended are Mar-
garet, Jennifer, Megan, Catherine
and Lauren Bordelon; Roi-Lynne
and Colun Hulin; and Charles and
Rosemarie Venderame. The Festa is
celebrated by members who come
to see old friends and enjoy a sum-
mer afternoon together reminiscing
about old times. Un grande evento
ogni anno!
