TREE CHEERS FOR
GREEN SCHEME
A
tree was planted at Redcar ’ s Ings Farm Primary School to further cement the school ’ s green credentials . The tree planting stemmed from a project coordinated by roofing supplier Alumasc , property consultant Sanderson Weatherall and Galileo Multi Academy Trust .
Galileo MAT has undertaken significant roofing works , following the completion of Planned Preventative Maintenance ( PPM ) reports by Sanderson Weatherall , which were used to highlight areas of urgent maintenance requirements and to assist the trust in its budget planning over the next five years .
Working closely with Alumasc as the preferred material supplier , Sanderson Weatherall was appointed designer and project manager to tender and undertake contract administrator duties during the course of the work .
Being able to obtain warranties for both materials and workmanship , and to leave the school roofs in a high level of repair and essentially maintenance free for a number of years , will be of significant benefit to the way the trust is able to manage its future property expenditure . David Fairley , partner at Sanderson Weatherall , said : “ We ’ ve recently worked on a number of similar projects for Galileo and are excited to see work progress at Ings Farm . We put a real focus on sustainability and selected Alumasc as the roofing supplier due to their materials ticking a lot of boxes when it comes to green credentials .”
Alumasc ’ s CO2 neutralising cap sheet , Derbigum Olivine , was specified at Ings Farm as sustainability was a huge focus for the school . The bituminous membrane has a naturally occurring mineral upper layer that neutralises the most prevalent greenhouse gas via an irreversible chemical reaction when it comes into contact with rainfall .
Each olivine granule is large enough to last 30 years before having completely reacted . 1kg of olivine granules has the capacity to neutralise 1.25kg of CO2 , meaning over its 30-year lifetime , this 900m2 project could potentially absorb 1,575kg of CO2 .
The membrane is also 100 per cent recyclable , which adds to its sustainable characteristics , and is approved by the British Board of Agrément .
John Flowers is an approved contractor to install Alumasc Roofing products , and won the tenders for Ings Farm Primary School , Lakes Primary School and John Emmerson Batty Primary School ( all part of the Galileo Multi Academy Trust ) based on their experience and expertise in this type of refurbishment work . A diverse range of Alumasc Roofing products were specified for the three schools , keeping a sustainable approach in mind .
Matty Hyson , area technical manager at Alumasc Roofing , commented : “ It ’ s always a pleasure to work closely with Sanderson Weatherall and , on this occasion , the Galileo Trust . Alumasc values the importance of being sustainable and embraces solutions and practices which help to minimise any potential negative impact on the environment , such as the tree planting initiative .”
By continuing to invest in green technology , the trust says it will endeavour to ensure environmental sustainably is at the heart of all new initiatives . This will be underpinned by the inclusion of environmental consideration being heavily weighted in all of its tendering processes . It ’ s hoped that approach will encourage and enable the schools within the trust to embed a culture of environmental awareness and , ultimately , improve the motivation of its current and future pupil cohorts .
Ings Farm Primary headteacher Tim Bethell said : “ It ’ s vitally important for us to provide an environment where every kid through the door is secure , relaxed and provided with the best possible opportunity to learn .
“ We instil a number of values within the kids , including sustainability , and driving forward a green focus for the next generation . The fact that the roofing materials provide such outstanding benefits and for the tree to be planted further reinforces our commitment .
“ I ’ d like to thank both Sanderson Weatherall and Alumasc for their support in making this happen .”
