GIN PALACE !
Tek Contracting helps serve up ideal home for award-winning distiller
Tek Contracting is helping to deliver a truly “ exciting space ” that will provide York Gin with the perfect spot .
York Gin ’ s distillery in the city ’ s Coppergate will not only distil gin but will also create an area to relax and enjoy a cocktail or two in what will be a 200-cover bar / restaurant .
It has been the brainchild of York Gin to convert into a multi-functional , multifloored space , creating an attraction that will bring both local and tourist footfall to an area that already boasts the Jorvik Viking Centre and Fenwick ’ s department store .
Tek Contracting , part of the Tek Build family , on Skippers Lane Industrial Estate , Middlesbrough , is proud to be playing such a major role .
Stephen Robinson , managing director of Tek Contracting , said : “ Tek Contracting has brought its wealth of experience in all fields of construction to satisfy the needs of its client , to embrace their ecological principles and , with Native Architects , develop the design to deliver a building which satisfies the environmental agenda , while ensuring economic viability and timely phased completion .”
York Gin has won gold medals at the world ’ s top spirits competitions , and its internationally famous shop on Pavement has been crowned one of the best in York .
Its passion is to embrace the principles of reuse , reduce and recycle , principles that have flowed throughout the design and construction process , which have evolved to deliver their goals .
The building was originally constructed in 1985 after a ten-year wait while the site underwent archaeological investigation .
Originally let to C & A , it was converted into the Park restaurant when the middle section of the concrete first floor was removed to allow a wooden staircase with suspended intermediate timber floors to give a very 1980s restaurant feel .
Boots took over the building lease in the ’ 90s and made further substantial structural changes .
Stephen added : “ As part of the client ’ s ethos , wherever possible materials were reused within the conversion , including structural steel , ventilation and air conditioning .
“ Waste materials were separated for better recycling where possible and reused offsite .
“ Timber joists were initially reused as edge protection before being earmarked by a local allotment society , and the original doors were repurposed to make a shed .
“ The finishes will reflect the simple

honesty of the building and the various stages that the building has morphed into in its short life span and will be visible for all to see , from the exposed steelwork to the large , cantilevered floors . The finishes are well thought out and of simple , sustainable nature .”
Everything is in line with trying to help the environment too . For example , the simple palette of materials and approach to stripped back surface treatment minimises the use of superfluous carbon-intensive materials and reveals the character of the building and its progression over the years .
Tek Contracting ’ s scope of work includes enabling , demolition , structural adaptions and installations , replacement of the missing first floor and the installation of new sections of a floor plate , new mezzanine floor and second floor , new walls , installation of M & E services , finishes to walls , floors and ceilings , feature mesh and steel staircase , accessible platform lift , fixtures and fittings and a gin bottle chandelier .
The building has been stripped back to the bare bones to uncover huge potential for the truly exciting space .
