ASL Monologue – “Perception”
(3 ½ minutes long)
The experimental 2011 animation work by Theodor Wolff deserves attention as it involves
signing that is all digitalized, yet realistic and enjoyable. The video's creator, Mr. Wolff, was
determined to see that ASL is perceptually successful through his animation work, thus giving it the
title, "Perception." The animation technology is remarkable in its depiction of signing ASL as a human
language. Please understand that the animated male character in the video is not merely signing, but
he is also performing on stage with a monologue. This character can be described brooding and
somewhat philosophical. This includes reminding the audience that the signed language is the focal
point of the video. The character makes his point in ASL that he is perfectly fine with that and it is his
opportunity to shine!
