We fear that too many Australian organisations don’t fully value the importance and contribution of the project management function to organisational success and therefore in turn don’t give sufficient consideration to the career advancement pathways for professional project managers. The speech content would be informed by a special Australian Institute of Management VT survey targeted at project management professionals to assess the relevance of their skills for promotion to top level executive positions including CEO. The survey would determine the career aspirations of professional project managers; identify what are the skill gaps that need to be conquered for project managers’ elevation to the top management echelon of their organisations; as well as discovering the recognition and status of the project management function within organisations. Subject to the views of the conference organisers, we could also survey a general management audience on how their organisations supported the project management function, how they rate the contribution of project management to attainment of business goals in their organisations and also get the opinion of this general management audience on what skills gaps do project management professionals in their organisations need to overcome if they’re to be considered for top executive roles
